Introduction

Local Italian wines importer, Luigi's wines hosted a dinner featured the wines of San Patrignano and presented by export manager Federico Rainero. And I am particularly pleased to have the chance to taste three different vintages of AVI, San Patrignano's flagship wine - 2005, 2008 and 2010, all served from large format bottles.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

  • NV San Patrignano Vino Spumante Brut Start Emilia IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Emilia-Romagna, Emilia IGT

Aperitif on arrival and pair with Rolled Beetroot Cured 'Petuna' Ocean Trout.
Light straw yellow with nice energetic beads in the glass. Fresh and aromatic nose, very fruity with a hints of sweetness as well, showing lychee, apricot, tropical fruits, floral and violet notes.
Lots of freshness and bright acidity on the palate lead to a dry mid-palate. It has nuances of white flower, tropical fruits, peach and honey. A touch of yeastiness also add to the complexity and it ends well with a good length of finish.
Getting better compare to my previous tasting and it is a nice aperitif and enjoy in a hot day. Made using charmat method and it is as good as a Prosecco, refreshing and fruity.

  • 2005 San Patrignano Sangiovese di Romagna Riserva Avi 93 Points

    Italy, Emilia-Romagna, Sangiovese di Romagna

2nd of the 3 vertical AVI pouring tonight, from a double magnum and pair with "Risone" Pasta with Braised Octopus. Dark and intense, still has young appearance with vibrant hues.
On the nose, still prominent coconut scents from the oak and it opens up to show blackberry, dark cherry and herbs. Nicely expressive and polished.
On the palate, very good and just started to develop, supple but richly entry, along with black cherry, dark fruits and hints of dried herbs and earthiness. Fine chewy tannins and superb finish, long and satisfying.
I like its solid mid-palate and finish but somehow it seems to lack complexity for a wine at this age and pedigree.

  • 2008 San Patrignano Sangiovese di Romagna Riserva Avi 93 Points

    Italy, Emilia-Romagna, Sangiovese di Romagna

3rd of the 3 vertical AVI pouring tonight, from a magnum and pair with Sous Vide Iberico Pork Collar with Carob Sauce and Pickled Onion.
Dark ruby with crimson hues, nice expressive nose with polished and perfume oak, dark cherry, plum, dark fruits and spice. Fresh on palate, but also rich and dense, packed with flavours of ripe fruits, dark cherry, dark plum and spice. Very good Sangiovese expression with a solid structure. Oak is still prominent on the palate with coconut notes but integrating well. Long persistent finish and ripe chewy tannins. Still young and it has a good structure to age well. Solid QPR for a wine at this pedigree. Will try to revisit again in few years time.
