Introduction

An unstructured and unthemed lunch at Dave's with the wine ark boys and Estella. Everyone brought some random wines and food offerings and we all tucked in.

Flight 1 - Food to match (6 Notes)

Bruschetta with grape tomatoes, smoked brisket, pate, tapenade, sour dough bread, olives with the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay.
Massive Flinstone style Rump steaks, potato salad and green salad with the two Riberas and the Ridge.

  • 2010 Philippe Bornard Arbois Pupillin Le Blanc de la Rouge

    France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin

On the nose butter, herbs (touches of lemon thyme), slight citrus of predominantly lemon, spicy notes as well as a certain chalky minerality. In the mouth the wine has citrus over herbs, butter and spice and is quite broad on the palate. It's refreshing and, though only medium length, very pleasant.

  • 2009 Jean-Marc Burgaud Beaujolais-Villages Château de Thulon

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages

Medium minus intensity aromas of sour red cherry and, almost, pomegranate. Slight spice here as well. Perhaps harvested a little early in such a ripe year? In the mouth the wine is juicy with sour cherry and slight cedar and burnt/ash notes, low intensity fine talc textured tannins. Despite it's age it's not really developing any tertiary characteristics and is still quite simple and fresh and none the worse for that. Nice.

  • 2013 BK Wines Pinot Noir Skin n' Bones

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Initial aromas of spice then berry and cherry, slight stalky/greenness and touches of dry dirt. In the mouth the wine is a touch sour and tart with burnt stalky notes over red berry and slight red currant. There are also slightly drying flour textured tannins that persist here. With time the fruit begins to flesh out a little, gaining some sweetness. Hmm. Time required?

  • 2009 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

On the nose there are toasted red berries, vanilla, a slightly oxidised quality and some cream & butter as well. In the mouth the are more toasted ripe red berries with a touch of residual sugar for me, cream and sweet vanilla, slightly chalky tannin grips the mouth but the fruit and oak carry on the longish finish and are joined by non-intrusive alcohol heat. today this is very nice for me.

  • 2011 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Medium minus aromas of considerable spice over red berries and, more diminished again, vanilla and cream. In the mouth the wine is quite dense and thick with dominant black over red berries and chewy tannins followed by a considerable alcohol heat on the finish. Young and boisterous but not unpleasant. I'd say it needs a year or two to just calm down a bit and for the presumed oak spice to integrate a bit.

  • 2007 Ridge Lytton Springs

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Plums, slight black cherry, cream vanilla, toast and hints of herbaceousness on the nose. On the palate it's plummy, black cherry savoury joy with some vanilla and slight spice. Firm but silky tannins. Yumptious.

Closing

And a lovely time was had by all. All the wines were pleasant - The BK wine told me that I'm a Pinot snob so I really should try and set up a tasting with some Burgundies and some of these and try the whole lot blind. Hmm.
