A Good Friday

A super casual get-together for a few bottles of fun wine and some Parson's to boot (thanks Mark!).

• 2013 Arianna Occhipinti Sicilia SP68 Bianco 88 Points

  Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

  What an experience. A very high-toned lemon nose. Super aromatic, super bright, you can almost taste the warm Sicilian sunshine. This has a lot of acidity, but it doesn't have the same intensity that you'd find from a chardonnay or riesling. The dominant thing here are the intense perfumed aromatics, that somehow still play out on the palate. Super fun to try.

• 2009 Didier Dagueneau Silex 90 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

  Botrytis and gooseberries. What a funky combination. Super rich nose coupled with a racy and green palate makes for a really interesting wine. Racy with good acidity, and a nice mineral tone to it, despite its heavier fruit character. Quite rich, this coats the palate with a thick luscious texture. A well-crafted bottle of sauvignon blanc, if it isn't the most traditional.

• 2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Luchets 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  Fresh off the UPS truck! Strangely, and perhaps a bit disturbingly, a slightly advanced colour. Cause for concern? There aren't any advanced notes on the palate or nose though. A moderate dose of sulphur, which is present, though not loud by any stretch of the imagination. Mineral, steely, and smoky, with very little fruit, though there might be a hint of lemon blossoms if you look for them. Certainly, not a super-concentrated wine, but this has a quiet and dignified poise about it. I revisited this about eight hours after it had been opened. If anything, the minerality and acidity had increased in stature. More austere, more aristocratic now. Geez, Jean-Marc makes some insanely good chardonnay.

• 2005 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

  This was very ripe and fruit forward, and lacked most of the stony mineral, sulphur, and other inorganic elements that I find often in Boillot's wines. Nonetheless, this had ample acidity to hold the fruit in check, but man was this a lot bigger and fatter than I'm accustomed to. A bit tropical as well, which I thought was a bit strange, but hey, this still worked pretty well for me.

• 2012 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

  A very subdued bottle of Chambolle. Light aromatics of red cherries and some floral notes, but not giving very much. The palate has gentle tart red fruit notes, and a very light touch to everything. Crystalline and pure. A small little bit of oak peeks through at the end, but it is very quiet. The tannins are young and still coarse, but that'll clean itself up with time. There's a certain placidity to this wine which I found enigmatic. One not to be disturbed for now, though you won't have many regrets should you fall to temptation now.

• 2012 Arianna Occhipinti Il Frappato 90 Points

  Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

  Again, a super aromatic and floral wine, with tons going on both on the nose and palate. The fruit here is so juicy and exuberant, this strongly evoked the exuberance of a little kid playing in a ball pit or bouncy castle. It reminded me of the label of La Turque. Multi-faceted fruit with an indefatigably joyous attitude. Super racy acidity on the palate. How do they keep the wines so cool out in the hot Sicilian sun?
