Devine restaurant, clarence street,
Tasted Monday, March 30, 2015 by chatters with 270 views
Impromptu Supper with Elissa post a mocked up WSET tasting. We popped to devine and had some by the glass stuff with a couple of pizzas. Back to my usual lazy note taking!
The blaufrankisch was by far and away the best wine. The pinot was interesting in an overblown Californian way but the other two wines were pretty atrocious - probably been open a bit too long for 'by the glass'. These guys need to buy an argon spritzer or some description. Poor form for a place that is run by somebody who imports wine.
2010 Gesellmann Pinot Noir Siglos
Austria, Burgenland, Mittelburgenland
Medium plus intensity aromas of dark, broodingly fruit, quite forest floor and jammy cherry, some stalks, perhaps quite rich, vanilla and cream, almost clove and date and quite funky, slight crushed rocks. In the mouth the wine has medium acid, quite spice and rich, fine but slightly chewy tannins quite warm alcohol, broad on the palate with rich fruit, kind of nice in an overblown way.

2012 Nittnaus Blaufränkisch Kalk und Schiefer
Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Aromas of bonfire and black berries, slight (and not unpleasant) rubber notes, slight spice, quite crushed rock and cheesy notes. On the palate the wine was juicy, fresh, muted black berry fruit, fine tannins. Quite simple but, having said that, beautifully balanced, refreshing and enjoyable. Very pleasant.

2013 Stefani Estate Sangiovese Boccallupo
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Cherry and red berry, cream, vanilla, slight sweet spice and herbaceous notes. In the mouth there are flavours of cherry and berry, lack acidity, talc textured tannin, short. Meh

2009 Vigne Surrau Barriu Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
slight herbaceous notes, slight red and black cherry and prune notes. In the mouth the wine is juicy but slight closed with spicy notes, cream and then some chalky textured tannin. A little non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Prune flavours. pretty average. Meh.
