Introduction

All wines tasted blind and scored using MOT scoresheet (which normally pulls score down a few points). With hindsight 2 wines had had over 10 hours decanting and the others varied from 2 to 4 hours.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Duclaux Côte-Rôtie La Germine 84 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    Dry with a hint of light smokiness. I could not get much nose. Short finish

  • 2010 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    This was very interesting as we had 2 identical Saint-Cosme 2010 in the blind tasting. One was decanted for 3 hours and the other for over 10 hours.

    This tasting was the lightly decanted one and it scored lower. Strawberry on the nose with a hint of a fruit I could not make out - maybe towards a guava? Pepper and french camembert too. Quite a complex nose but the finish was a little lacking.

  • 2007 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Méal 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Clinical clean nose. Light tannins 5.5/10 with tobacco on the nose too. A light refined finish. Clearly French.

  • 2010 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    This was very interesting as we had 2 identical Saint-Cosme 2010 in the blind tasting. One was decanted for 3 hours and the other for over 10 hours.

    This was the long decanted one and it was a lot smoother and gentle.

  • 2008 Alban Vineyards Syrah Patrina Alban Estate Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

    A very limited nose. I struggled to find fruit. But what it lacks in nose, it makes up for as you drink it. It creeps up on you from mid palate onwards. Full bodied and youthful. Nice tannins

  • 2012 Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Smooth (determined it was decanted for more than 10 hours) - with a lengthy finish.

  • 2007 d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz-Viognier 87 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Petroleum on the nose together with tobacco. Nice medium bodied with above average finish.

  • 2006 Mollydooker Shiraz Carnival of Love 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    A muted hint of caramel in the nose. Smells young and lively. Full bodied with a lot of life left.

  • 2012 Lewis Cellars Alec's Blend 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Typical Napa or Fruity Australian fruit bomb for me. Strong enticing caramel on the nose (made me think of Velvet Glove) with vanilla and then spice and youthfulness on the palate.

    The wine goes dry quite quickly. So it hits you, draws you in and then disappears. The finish brought the score down otherwise this would have been nicely in the 90's
