Introduction

We ran through this excellent range with the winemaker Nicole, who happens to be one of the daughters of M. Lamarche. This vintage (2013) was the first that she vinified on her own, and she is rightly quite proud of the results. This is a woman who has clearly mastered the art of multitasking, as she accomplishes these viticultural feats while chasing around twin 7 year old boys!

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2013 Domaine François Lamarche Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

Light red and light weight. Crisp black fruit, licorice, and snappy acidity. Very good at this level.

  • 2013 Domaine François Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Red. Already fragrant. Light weight, fine black fruit, high acidity and a slightly peppery finish. Lean, classic, in need of time.

  • 2013 Domaine François Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Also medium red color. Slightly rounder than the Chaumes, but still classic with a tart core of acidity. More backward than that wine. I really liked its unadorned purity.

  • 2013 Domaine François Lamarche Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Red. This too is very fragrant. Not a big wine at all. Tightly coiled clean crystallized fruit which seems slightly sweeter than in either of the Vosnes. Powerful acidity, very long. This is incredibly fine and refined. Terrific potential to turn into something subtle and beautiful.

  • 2013 Domaine François Lamarche Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Darkest color of range. Biggest, most meaty wine although not burly. All black fruit, great acidity. Quite tannic. Needs 10 years. Excellent.

  • 2013 Domaine François Lamarche La Grande Rue

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

Deep red. Very high toned perfume. Sweeter sense than any of the other wines. Great roundness and mouth feel without any excess ripeness or weight. Prominent bolstering cranberry acidity. This is exceptionally finely rendered. A bit funny to taste after the Clos Vougeot since it is supremely elegant and feminine. The most satisfying wine in this excellent range.
