• 2009 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot Près le Cellier 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

  Light see through plum core with lighter rim; penetrating nose, luxurious, tons of spice, sour dark cherry, plum skin, slight rhubarb; pure on the palate, powerful, layers of fat, a streak of iron, fruit is just starting to change softening and lightening in color, oak is in check; very good, 93+.

• 2009 Château des tauzins

  France, Bordeaux, Graves

  50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot; opaque core with dull purple rim; the nose leaps out of the glass and has character very few have at this price, clay, gravel, cigar, red currant, green pepper; good fullness on the palate, solid structure, nice grip, enjoy the complexity; really tastes like Graves, what a buy at this price!

• 2011 Quintessa

  USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

  From 375mL; dark core, opaque, dull reddish violet rim; deep black and red currant, green pepper, anise, pain grille, ripe plum, nose is reminiscent of a modern Bordeaux; high toned on the palate, nice grip and acid, tart fruit, some menthol, smoke, scrub brushy, iron note; good, seems a bit fresher and higher toned due to vintage.

• 2004 Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Auguste Favier 92 Points

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Dark red core showing some clarity, dull garnet rim; funk right off the bat, sour cherry, raspberry, bitter, fig paste, slight vanilla, nori; old school on the palate, very tart and sour hard red fruit, cranberry, raspberry, less fig, strong bitter aspirin finish which could be austere for many, hot stone minerality, fresh, great mid-palate, Burgundian; a CdP for CdP purists, love the Grenache, very pure, great transparency; could go 10+ more years and probably improve, 92+.

  Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

  Dark core with dull garner rim; sulfur is still prominent, plum, sour cherry, ripe, slight VA, licorice, some floral; firmer structure, Tuscan, slight tobacco, some cedar, darker red fruit, slight dried, red cherry; very good, thought it was BdM.

• 2008 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Dull see through ruby core with pale almost copper rim; sweet sour cherry, strawberry, vanilla, nice spice, penetrating, floral; lighter and softer on the palate, still some sweet fruit, nice texture; still youthful; called '08 Grivot VR.

• 2007 San Leonardo San Leonardo

  Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

  Dark core with dull dark crimson rim; a little bit of pine, dark red currant, boxwood, stony gravel; some spice, lots of clay, tobacco, cigar, tons of character; called S. Africa because it was almost too exaggerated to be Bordeaux; very good, give it some time.

• 2010 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Grèves

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Dark crimson, pale rim, see through; high toned, pink purple flower, white rock, dusty, a little reductive, very sour and tart fruit; almost bitter mineral on the palate, late tannic grip, slight tobacco; much more expressive than last bottle but still quite firm, give it some time to release its grip.

• 2000 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

  Dull crimson see through with brownish orange rim; caraway, slight soy, sarsaparilla, ketchup, fennel, sour cherry; thinning out a bit on the palate, sour cherry, dried orange peel, more fruit on the palate, slight note of tea, mushroom; this bottle was right near peak, the fruit on the nose seemed almost past peak but the freshness on the palate said it was still hanging in; good.

• 2007 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Herrenweg de Turckheim

  France, Alsace

  Deep golden yellow to rims with green hues that suggest acidity; exotic nose, honey, lychee, roses, pineapple, apple cider, white raisin, lots of freshness, spicy botrytis, yellow plum; some sweetness is evident on the palate but how does this have 15.5% ABV?!, honey, candied ginger, spicy palate, white raisin finish, pineapple juice, ripe peach, finishes nicely dry, just a touch of brandy warmth; delicious, so complex and interesting; still youthful and should go longer.

Lots of good wines tonight- hard to argue that and to pick a clear winner. The Camuzet Clos de Vougeot would be that, but so many others really "brought the thunder".
