2012 Simon Bize Wines

I had skipped the Bize table at this year's La Paulee. Based upon these entry level wines, I'm sorry that I did. An excellent range which apparently benefitted greatly from the riper conditions of the year.

• 2012 Simon Bize Bourgogne Blanc Les Perrières

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

  Ripe pear fruit and some oak toast. Impressive volume, texture, and balance for Bourgogne.

• 2012 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

  Leaner, more taut, higher acidity than the Bourgogne. Surprisingly good for Savigny Blanc.

• 2012 Simon Bize Bourgogne Les Perrières

  Light red. Funny-this has more of the Savigny brambliness than the 2 actual Savignys that were poured. Crisp, light, tart. Less impressive to me than the white Bourgogne was.

• 2012 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Bourgeots

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

  Ruby. Ripe red fruit nose. Approachable, medium weight, lovely red fruit and mouth feel. Gentle tannins. Much less foreboding than Bize of yesteryear.

• 2012 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

  Medium red. Also attractive cherry fruit, here mixed with some game and anise. Medium weight, clean and supple, good acidity and round tannins. This lacks the brambly bite of classic young Savigny but is very good. Another surprise given my mind's eye view of Bize wines.
