Introduction

Cheers to Adrian for organizing this incredible dinner and arranging for all the wines. I left impressed and even stunned with how beautifully these "modest" wines show with age. Clearly in strong vintages the wines can be aged for 40+ years and show stunning results. A wow line-up and experience.

  • NV André Clouet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Salmon color. Fresh cut strawberry and raspberry on the nose. Medium body with good tension and cut as the first impression on the palate. Power and muscle carry flavors that echo the nose. Good stuff and excellent value.

  • 1967 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 96 Points

    Oh my, this is incredible stuff. Color is a cloudy, translucent light garnet. Stunning aromas from the first whiff -- tar, earth, smoke, sous bois. A haunting aromatic that soars and lingers from the glass. This is a burg lovers nose. The palate is light bodied and ethereal, more about the acid and the persistent aroma. Big tar note emerges on the long back end. Spectacular.

    Interestingly much younger and more primary than the 1967 tasted next to this. Color is a dark garnet. Nose is primary and seemingly un-evolved with dark cherry fruit and floral with subtle earth notes. Palate shows more development and complexity than the nose -- medium weight cherry fruit, floral, herbs, earth and subtle tar. Fruit and balancing structure suggests this has what it takes to evolve further.

    Over the hill. Nose showed tired, dried out cherry fruit. Palate is soy sauce. Not at the same level as the 67, 74, 82 or 88 -- which were all rocking.

    This is a gorgeous wine that's still drinking with youthful exuberance. Just a hair below the 1967 tonight. The aromatic is spice driven with youthful red cherry, florals, herbs, tar and earth. Oh my, the palate is just killing it -- powerful sweet cherry fruit with moderate juicy acidity that provides lift and precision. Just pure and gorgeous.

    The 'baby' of the dinner does indeed feature the most power and youth. Gorgeous, powerful aromas of black cherry, cigar ash and a prominent herb component. Medium weight palate has abundant acid structure and tannin -- which still need time to integrate. Good underlying complexity. Believe it or not, needs time to come together.
