Delavenne is a maison that does not enjoy international attention, but (like the 2006) this 2008 is an excellent champagne. The blend of 50% Pinot Noir from Bouzy and 50% Chardonnay from Cramant combines the weight, ripe fruit and terroir of Bouzy with the freshness and minerality of Cramant, all wrapped in the energetic character determined by the vintage. Fort bon!
This is really an excellent wine. The expected weight and power of Les Tillets is built on an excellent core of steely acidity and minerals in this vintage. Oak is present but perfectly judged. A wine with richness, weight, elegance and drive. Punches far above its weight.
The 1995 is a classic, masculine and structured Barton, tannic and quite bloody, but this bottle has more soft ripe fruit and more succulence than the difficult and austere one tasted in December 2014. I think this is now fully mature, but I find it difficult to predict how time will treat this wine in the next two decades. There is not a lot of flesh, so it may go from muscular to sinewy to skeletal. But if the (recently tasted) Las Cases 1975 is anything to go by, it may also find a balance and wisdom that it did not have before.
Immensely concentrated and sweet, but somehow not cloying. Maple syrup, molasses, raisins, floral notes. A solid rather than profound PX but it is well balanced and attractive in its way.
