Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Veuve Clicquot seems to have really improved the quality of its entry-level NV since Dominique Demarville took over the reins as Chef de Caves in 2009. I use to pillory the wine, but the last few bottles I have had have actually been pretty good. Tonight’s started with a pleasant nose of sweet white fruit, white peach and floral aromas with a little mineral scents on the sides. The palate was clean and balanced, with a fine mousse and well-integrated acidity lending a sense of finesse to way the wine’s white fruit and citrus notes were held together. Decent finish too, with a lift of lime peel and a little suggestion of minerality right at the end. Nicely put together and quite pleasant, this was a very decent NV.

  • NV Gosset Champagne Brut Grande Réserve 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Another pretty good NV, this had an attractive nose, with ripe red apples, yeast, cream and a shade of earthy aromas. The palate was very primary, with simple but pleasant flavours of ripe apples and sweet lemons at the fore wed to a nice juicy character, with well-judged acidity and a lively mousse making for a nice drink. This was enjoyable.

  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Always dependable, this was a very solid NV Rose as always. Strawberries and lemons on the nose were met with an echo of similar notes on the palate, while fresh acidity, a fine mousse and a little trail of mineral and spice all added together to make a fine, very drinkable package with a good bit of substance to it. Good.
