La Las Dinner

Introduction

We decided to craft a dinner around two stellar bottles of rhone that we'd been dying to try: 1995 Guigal La Landonne and 1995 Guigal La Mouline. We couldn't find a good price on the 1995 La Turque so we opted to add a 1999 Jamet. We started with a rose champagne and some dueling Clos chablis. After we made our way through the reds, we still wanted another so opened an '03 Alban Seymour's. We finished with a Mr. K sticky.

Flight 1 - Champagne to Start (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Chablis for the Raw Bar (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Fantastic chablis with clear minerality and hints of citrus. Held up well to raw bar of shrimp and crab meat. Didn't quite match up to the 2009 Dauvissat Clos we poured next to it, but still a worthy contender.

  • 2009 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Gorgeous chablis. More masculine than the Raveneau's I've been drinking lately, but still a soft mouthfeel and beautifully balanced wine. Wonderful with raw bar of shrimp and crab meat. Still young and has many many years left on this bottle.

Flight 3 - The Reds (3 Notes)

  • 1995 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

More masculine and rough around the edges than its sister 1995 La Mouline. Dirtier and earthier than her too. A wonderful, complex cote-rotie that is amongst some of the best rhones I've had -- though that's maybe not saying as much as it might from some others. A great bottle, but feels young (or perhaps a bit shut down at the moment) and could use a few more years in the bottle.

  • 1995 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 99 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Arguably the WOTN. Elegant and feminine. Incredibly approachable right now, as opposed to it's sister 1995 La Landonne which needed some more time in the bottle. In my mind, this wine is everything that a great cote-rotie should be. I was fighting myself on a 99 or 100 score, but ultimately just have a hard time giving anything 100.

  • 1999 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

A great bottle of wine, but seemed a bit closed down right now. I would hold onto this for a few more years before opening again. I felt like it's probably got at least 20+ years of life in it.

Flight 4 - The Extra Red (1 Note)

  • 2003 Alban Vineyards Syrah Seymour's Vineyard 99 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

On this particular evening, this was the only new world wine amongst some incredible old world rhones, but still duked it out with a 1995 Guigal La Mouline for WOTN. Lush, velvety, crazy black and blue fruits. Spectacular. Drinking perfectly now.
