Dinner with Monthly Group at Gajali

Indian food with German Riesling - kinda worked.

• 2011 Eugen Müller Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Kabinett trocken 90 Points

  Germany, Pfalz

  Still primary, but this was not bad. The nose still had a sugary, grapey twang to it, along with subtler aromas of peach, red apple, and citrusy a undernote. With time, little mineral nuances started showing up as well. The palate was quite yummy. It had a very Pfalz sweet stone-fruited note at the attack and then more red appley flavours on the midpalate, all laced with a good amount of juicy acidity that have the wine a nice balance. Good finish too, with a slatey, mineral note and a little sprinkle of spice. Still very young, still primary – this could have done with 2-3 more years in the bottle. Otherwise, I thought it was quite decent for a trocken Riesling at its level.

• 2011 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett #2 92 Points

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  This was a very nice Kabinett. The nose showed charming little notes of white fruit and lime zest and little hints of white flowers underlined with chalk and slate and all sorts of little minerally notes. I liked that. The palate was showing quite beautifully. After a few over-sweet, full-on vintages in the Mosel, this was quite the classic Kabinett, with a lovely clarity and transparency to its white-fruited flavours. These were traced by a wonderful, gentle minerality that led it into a nicely persistent finish, and enlivened by juicy, energetic almost sparkly lifts of citrus-lime acidity. An absolutely lovely drink, starting to come into its own now.
