Introduction

Casual session that turned out really well, with an interesting mix of Pinots from Italy, Sonoma, and New Zealand. And a good Chard from Carneros.

  • 2013 Gian Luca Colombo Langhe Pinot Nero 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Had been aired for 2 hours in bottle before tasting.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of earth and indistinct red fruit. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, sweet strawberries, slight spice and earth. Medium+ finish.
    Good quality. Nice fruit and good depth. Would have preferred to try this on pop and pour instead.
    Very interesting Pinot Nero from a little 20 year old vineyard situated in Barolo village, near Cannubi.

  • 2009 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of slight nutty toasted oak, saline minerality, citrus lemon-lime. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, lots of saline minerality, citrus lemon, pineapple, and peaches. Medium+ finish.
    Lovely minerality that became more pronounced with more air. Framed nicely with a touch of oak, good acidity, and balanced fruit.
    Very good quality. Drinking well now. Drink up over the next 2-3 years.

  • 2005 Pahlmeyer Pinot Noir Jayson 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Poured into decanter and drank over 2 hours.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with slight garnet rim. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark red cherries, earth, mushrooms. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (14.9%!), medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet cola, licorice, earth, dark red cherries, truffle, mushrooms, and tea leaves. Medium+ finish.
    Very good quality. Fruit is still alive and lots of tertiary elements. But I fear the fruit will not hold up much longer. Drink up over next 2 years.
    From PinotFile: Jayson is the second label of Pahlmeyer. The wines are crafted from barrels that don't meet Pahlmeyer's rigid standards and are less expensive than the Pahlmeyer wines. That is not to say, however, that these wines are unworthy for they are produced in a similar fashion to the Pahlmeyer wines and stand on their own as very good. The 2005 vintage was the first for a Jayson Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

  • 2006 Schubert Pinot Noir Block B 92 Points

    New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with an initial blast of funkiness that blew off to reveal aromas of dark red cherries, loamy earth, smoky oak, sweet baking spices. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, smooth medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet licorice, smoky oak, baking spice, loamy earth, dark red cherries. Long finish.
    Guessed an aged NZ Pinot Noir. Very good quality. Drinking well now. Drink up over the next 2-3 years.
    NZ Pinot when done well does have the potential to age gracefully.
