Flight 1 - Tenuta delle Terre Nere (9 Notes)

Beautiful wines that are very fresh and Burgundian. Definitely an elegance here that leads the way in the region.
Fun tasting the individual vineyards at different elevations as it really brings up notions of terroir like Burgundy.
Their white was probably the best Italian white from the whole trip.

Flight 2 - Salvatore Molettieri (13 Notes)

Have had some wines of his before, but now I have a much better understanding.
Tasting with Salvatore's son, either Giovanni or Giuseppe. He looks just like his dad.
He spoke no English, but the Campania building had very nice translators available for us.
Mr. Molettieri very friendly and very generous pouring so many wines. I really enjoyed doing the mini verticals of each wine.
Some impressive stuff. Given the right age I feel their wines could be some of the top in their region.

Flight 3 - San Giusto a Rentennano (5 Notes)

A tremendous lineup. Probably my favorite wines of VinItaly.
Beautiful color to elegant perfumed noses and silky noble tannin. They were awesome.
Also, they may have had the best wine of the entire trip in their Vin Santo. So rich and viscous the only thing that may come close is a Tokaji Essenzia. Roughly 3x the sugar content of d'Yquem. Special stuff.
Rarely see their wines especially in GA, but I will be adding them to my short list.

  • 2013 San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Classico

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Pretty bright neon ruby; the flower and stem of roses, pretty strawberry, light cherry, vanilla; juicy, some grip, rose continues, red fruit; yum.

  • 2012 San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Similar color to the regular Chianti Classico with a bit more density; beautiful nose, serious, deep red fruit, a tick of cedar and orange oil, very young but gorgeous nose already; palate is power in a velvet glove, the firm acid and tannin indicate this should age incredibly.

  • 2011 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    100% Sangiovese, 20% new barriques for 20 months then 1 year in bottle; brilliant rose color to rim; cedar, tighter nose, roses, cherry, orange oil, very high toned; nice fullness on palate, sweet morello cherry, some polish, firm tannin; like balance but it needs more time in bottle; delicious.

  • 2012 San Giusto a Rentennano La Ricolma Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    100% Merlot; bright ruby to rim, good clarity; currant, plum, big and pent up, lots of gas in the tank, floral, some orange; lots of silky tannin, gobs of cherry, plum, fresh, long finish; great wine.

  • 2007 San Giusto a Rentennano Vin San Giusto Bianco

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    93% Malvasia, 7% Trebbiano, grapes dried for 120 days, aged 6 years in small chestnut barrels 60-75-120L, lost 55% of liquid in that time, 9.13% ABV, 5.18 g/L of acidity, 3.86 pH, ****468g/L of sugar!!!******
    Amber with pale rim, pours like syrup; lots of white raisin, orange marmalade, honey, caramel; extremely viscous, honey galore, strong, powerful stuff, take in small doses; an almost perfect bottle of wine that grabs your attention, had to find out what the g/L were when I tasted; need to get some but I know it ain't cheap, only 1,800 375mL bottles made.

Flight 4 - Siro Pacenti (3 Notes)

Great reputation but limited experience with the wines. They have always been hit or miss.
The use of French barrique is prominent in all of the wines.
The wines seemed very awkward at this phase I feel because of the oak.
I am not sure whether time will correct all of this, but I know time will be necessary for them to improve.

  • 2013 Siro Pacenti Rosso di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

    Dull light garnet, see through; deeper plum, vanilla from barrique, dark cherry pastry, guava; palate is a bit sharper, dark cherry, plum skin, dried strawberry; ok.

  • 2010 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Crimson with orange hues in rim; rose, red cherry, oak, perfumed, a bit awkward; structure sneaks up on you as the tannins build on the palate; good.

  • 2010 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    30-50 year old vines; see through crimson core with orange rim; high toned, floral, crushed rose, dried red fruit, strong orange peel; palate is a bit less intense than nose, tannin comes out; needs time to come together.

Flight 5 - GIuseppe Mascarello (5 Notes)

Tasting with mama. Very sweet but very little English spoken. Don't believe she poured the whole lineup but very generous none the less.
The wines were truly Burgundy in the Piedmont. Light color and extraction, floral and fresh noses, sappy mid palates, and rounder tannin.
Really brilliant stuff that I need to seek out.

Flight 6 - Silvio Grasso (7 Notes)

Tasting with Paolo (son) Grasso.
The wines were slightly rustic. The refinement that is expected from French oak wasn't quite there.
A lot of variability in the wines and not really a sense of style.
Some of the wines are highly encouraging, though.
Will probably stock up on some of their Barolos.

Flight 7 - Fratelli Revello (9 Notes)

Tasting with daughter, Elena.
The wines showed great beauty. It has to be a huge advantage when you have vineyards like these.
Our neighbor 2 doors down when we travelled to Barolo.
Cool wines that I will seek out more often.
My one complaint would be they use more neutral oak. There was such great purity beneath the wood tannin.

  • 2013 Fratelli Revello Barbera d'Alba Ciabot du Re

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

    Done in 90% new barrique; deep extracted maroon; sweet dark fruit, slight roasted character, sweet, slight vanilla; fuller on the palate, perfumed, sweet darker berry, light on feet but good density; good.

  • 2012 Fratelli Revello L'Insieme

    Italy, Piedmont, Vino da Tavola

    Barbera, Nebbiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon; garnet core with light rim; dark cherry, currant, sour red fruit, nice density, sweet and roasted, very nice nose, apple skin; nicely rounded, good acid and sap; tasty.

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    From younger vines of their cru wines; crimson with rusty rim; sweet and sour cherry, sour plum, orange; firm but nice sweetness, decent focus and drive for normale, sandalwood; good.

    Crimson core with onion skin rim; pretty floral, rose, sweet soft cherry, very elegant; strong tannin, dry but still has sweet fruit and juicy acid; good.

    Bright rose crimson core with orange hues in rim; floral, sexy nose, penetrating, silky, red cherry, ripe strawberry; lighter entry, elegant, softer tannin than the Giachini, firm acid; great.

  • 2011 Fratelli Revello Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Dull crimson, deeper color, orange hues in rim; sweet cherry pastry, yes!, penetrating, pure, total focus, slight orange; fine sweet tannin, dark cherry, some plum, some wood tannin on the finish making this larger and less elegant than it should be; needs time, delicious.

    Deeper crimson, less clarity, rust in rim; deeper nose, cherry, liqueur, cedar, medicinal; strong tannin (wood), fuller body; dry but tasty.

Flight 8 - Cigliuti (7 Notes)

Tasting with Claudia Cigliuti.
She was very nice but you could tell she had been doing this for 4 days and was ready to leave.
The wines were much darker and less clean than I typically prefer. Lots of character though.

    A single vineyard; again more extraction, reddish violet; sweet plum and dark berry, leather undertones, meaty, serious nose; sweet dark cherry, intense, less focus; very good.

    Declassified Barbaresco; ruby to rim, clarity; new, some candy, sweet rose, plum tea; more tannin, like floral qualities and lighter dark fruit on the palate.

Flight 9 - Paolo Scavino (14 Notes)

Tasting with Elisa Scavino.
Wines were tremendous. Had a feel like Vietti in the fact they are great ambassadors of the region.
Different varietals from different vineyards all showing differing characteristics.
Tremendous quality and joy to drink.

  • 2014 Paolo Scavino Langhe Sorriso

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Piemontese word meaning 'smile'; 40/40/20 Chard/Sauv. Blanc/Viognier; pale color; fruit initially then grass from the SB, crisp in the background; nice richness along with good crispness, aromatic, gooseberry, exotic fruit; good.

    Brick core, lighter rim; cherry, dried rose, a little linear in the nose, warmer; firmer and more linear on the palate too, sharp acid, firm tannin, iron; very different from other 2011 Barolos in their lineup.

    Deeper crimson with paler rim; lots of licorice on the nose, deep sweet red cherry, spicy, juicy, cinnamon; great round fullness to the tannin, lots of focus and nobility in the mid; awesome.

Flight 10 - Giacomo Grimaldi (7 Notes)

In the same booth as Paolo Scavino. Tasting with Ferruccio Grimaldi and Elisa Scavino. Elisa was very generous with her family's wines and she encouraged me to taste her brother-in-law's. Ferruccio is married to Enrica.
I felt a little sorry as Elisa's wines commanded almost all of the attention. Ferruccio has very nice wine and his family has great vineyard holdings south of Barolo proper.
I wasn't that familiar with his wines, but this was very enlightening. Thank you.
