Three French wines walked into a Kebob House

Introduction

As always - good wine and excellent company makes a weeknight into a holiday. And a much needed one after all the final paper grading.

for my own taste - i liked the V.J. a touch more simply because it is a bit closer to my own preference. On the other hand - the Janasse is the more complete wine, albeit more "international" in profile.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    cherry and blackberries, leather, some funk. mid is essence of sour cherry. deep wine with medium weight. notes of garrigue, some chewy fruit towards the end. long sweet and sour finish. very good to excellent.
    Day2 - cherry pie nose. spice and savory note. mid more resolved - sour cherry - almost cherry pit feel - and meat. good chewy note on the back palate. nice long finish with a kick of spice. good acidity. fully mature and delicious.

  • 2003 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    sweet ripe black fruit, good acidity, note of bitter chocolate in the mid. the fruit is ripe but there is a balance of structure holding it up. just a touch of warmth on the back palate. good finish with some licorice . delicious.
    Day 2: almost Cali pinot note on the nose - cola-like. sweet red and black fruit. plum. mid is ripe, though excellently balanced with acidity. sweet black fruit dominate. back palate is softer - lusher - with ripe notes of red plum. good finish with spice and a zing of acid.

  • 2005 Château Peyrabon 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    showing young - though quite drinkable. opens with led and cassis. dark berries. ripe mid with good acidity and chewy tannins. tasty, medium finish with some zing. i would say this will develop well for several more years and will be a lovely dinner wine. Shows the classic potential of cru bourgeois wines.
