Introduction

Tasting each vintage of the Para tawny port accompanied by a mini lecture on what was happening at that time during World War 1. Absolutely fascinating and a powerful context against which to appreciate the incredible age of these wines.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1914 Seppeltsfield Para 100 Vintage Tawny 96 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Black and very dense, a faint green hue. After a swirl it literally takes minutes for the residue to completely slide back down.
    Gorgeously rich nose, fragrant reduced fruitcake, tar, caramel, vanilla and molasses.
    Thick and syrupy but with quite enough acidity to leave a clean crisp finish. The flavours last forever, incredible length. Flavours follow the nose but with a richer darker seam as well as a faintly peppery bite.

  • 1915 Seppeltsfield Para 100 Vintage Tawny 97 Points

    Rich nose, vanilla is strong, butterscotch too, concentrated fruitcake, tar, caramel and a green edge of olive tapenade.
    Thick and syrupy but with quite enough acidity to leave a clean crisp finish. The flavours last forever, incredible length. Flavours follow the nose with more of the sweeter crime caramel as well as bright concentrated berry flavours and a hint of pine needles. Slightly brighter fruit and more interest than the 1914

  • 1916 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur 96 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Classic texture, syrupy.
    Deeply dark, ancient fruitcake with creme caramel and vanilla. Fragrant, black spice and tar.
    Very smooth and velvety, lush long and intense. Classic profile with dark dark fruits, earthy spice, soy, prune, baked blackberries, amazing intensity and length. A little less vanilla than the others.

  • 1917 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur 99 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Very dark, black to the core.
    Lovely rich fragrance. Smooth but intense, very dark fruits, strong earthy char, orange rind zest.
    A step up in intensity if that's possible. Thick, powerful, but still silky smooth and very very long. Charred fruits, tar, burnt sugar, tart tatin, with a refined black spice and a hint of orange rind zest. Amazing.

  • 1918 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur 97 Points

    Very dark, black.
    Classic deeply fragrant nose, fruit-driven, olive tapenade, creme caramel.
    Slightly lighter frame than others, but with brighter fruits and a little more of the green olive tapenade richness, less pure black char and spice. Very long smooth finish.
