We thought we were going for sushi.

T and I decided to head to the Wedgewood Hotel to grab a cocktail while waiting for Ray Sig to chopper back from the Victoria Wine Fest. Ray was going to join us with his delightful girlfriend emiel.

We decided that we would go for sushi after drinks, but that all changed onced Ray arrived and declared a dinner at Cioppino's was the order of the night. Cioppino's is one of the finest restaurants in Vancouver and Pino the owner is not shy about his pricing for both food and especially wine.

We drank this at the Wedgewood while waiting on Ray.

• 1987 Lungarotti Umbria San Giorgio 85 Points

  Italy, Umbria

  Last bottle on the list at the Wedgewood. A blend of Cabernet, Sangiovese and an obscure grape Cannaiolo. Very funky nose that blew off with time but was still very rustic. Soed signs of cedar and tobacco. The color was not as light as I would have thought and there was very little bricking. It was a medium bodied wine that showed more traits of the Sangiovese than Cabernet.

Once at Cioppino's I'm not sure how this happened but we just kept having Massimo pull corks till we had a nice little horizontal going.

• 1999 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

  What a great wine, deep red color followed by a nose of black fruits and espresso. A full bodied mouth filling wine that was just gorgeous and ready to drink now. Tannins were well integrated and very fine. This was my first experience with Pertimali, but as Ray mentioned we should go grab a case of this each.

• 1999 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 88 Points

  This wine was tight in comparison to the Pertimali. Nose was closed but showed signs of dark cherries and some spice and herbal notes. A bit darker colored than the previous Pertimali. In the mouth the first thing that hits you is the acidity of this wine. Not sure what happened, but the acidity stood out like a hooker in a nunnery. Over time the wine settled down, but I am in no hurry to try this again.

• 1999 La Campana Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

  Last wine of the night and the lightest in color. Very nice nose that was classic Sangiovese. The wine was more full bodied in the mouth than I would have expected from the color. Very enjoyable with smooth tannins and a nice finish. This was another wine to go grab maybe a half case of.

A nice little plan for sushi turned into quite a night of over indulgence.
