Introduction

Private lunch at a beautiful private club in the heart of Beaune, as a guest of some new Burg friends.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2000 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne

I arrived late for lunch. It was very warm out. This really hit the spot. Apple, citrus and toasted walnut came through, and then voila, there was no more Champagne in my glass.

  • 2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

From magnum. Ripe with lots of power, but also the textures to maintain excellent balance. Large, long and persistent start-to-finish. Good now, getting better. An exceptional wine for its price.

  • 2001 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Lots of earth, moderate fruit. More firm structure than what I would like for the given level of fruit and spice. Ok.

  • 1998 Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Red and. Black cherry, slightly backward, with good spice. Firm. Seemingly at a reticent phase in its evolution but with the substance to improve. Give this more time.

  • 1997 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Nicely mature red fruit on nose and palate, but this is all about the sweet baking spice the is easy to admire and adore. At its absolute peak just about now. Yum.

  • 1934 Bailly Maurice Romanée St. Vivant

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Earth and very nice spice that comes as very Vosne-like, but with a far advanced level of evolution that detracted from the overall level of enthusiasm for this wine. Philippe said another recent bottle from the same case was much better.

  • 1959 Challind Richebourg 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

I think I got the spelling correct for this obscure (at best) negociant. Plenty of mature red fruit hat is still vibrant, with great spice. Good length, great elegance.
