New years eve, dinner with family

Introduction

Only a small dinner with family, but we ended up with some superb wines. Not all that expensive or outstanding, but the average level was very high and not a single bad bottle. I was surprised to see that the brunate was not any better as I had expected it to outperform the barolo from Fontanafredda and brunello from Barbi. The best value was without any doubt the Colterenzio Pinot Bianco.

  • 2005 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Pinot Bianco 86 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    Very acidic and crisp pinot bianco from the Classic-range from the co-op Colterenzio. Very concentrated to be a "simple" pinot bianco, however it is similar in style to other pinot biancos (weissburgunder) from alto-adige. The best value of the day, excellent rating but very cheap. Try again (and again and again..)

    Excellent wine, but the nose should have been better (the 2000 Fontanafredda smelled better, at half the price)

    Surprisingly good quality, even though it is very fruity and open it could easily rival the Brunate from Briccho Rocche (Ceretto). Improved dramatically through decanting

    Very tannic and still very young. I didn't have high expectations for this brunello, but it blew me away - marginally better than the two barolos. The best wine of the day.

  • 2003 Höpler Riesling Eiswein 88 Points

    Excellent Eiswein. A blend of Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling and Muskat Ottonel. Increadible balance, it hardly taste sweet at all.

    Yet another very good bottle of the 10 years old tawny from niepoort, but I do favor the colheitas. Very good value.
