Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Rieussec 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From a 375. Golden-orange color, advanced for its age but appropriate for 2003; nose has orange caramel, slight "hot" orange like Quady's orange essensia, some underlying baking spice; palate is full bodied, ripe orange fruit, moderate sweetness, slight oxidation, some orange, some caramel, not plodding but also lacks vibrant acidity of the 2006 next to it, fruit is very ripe but the alcohol isn't out of place, lacks depth but pleasant; finish is medium length. Overall this is ripe, fruit-based, balanced alcohol but low acid, well-integrated Sauternes drinking well now. Not bad, but not a top Rieussec and I actually prefer the more balanced, more complex, higher acid 2006 consumed side-by-side.

  • 2006 Château Rieussec 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From a 375. Golden color, appropriate for its age; nose is overall subtle-medium intensity, has baking spice, some guava, pineapple, ripe tropical fruits; palate has full body, rich texture, youthful sweetness, vibrant lively acidity soon after it hits the palate that carries it through the wine, tropical white fruits, botrytis baking spice, towards the finish is morphs into a more secondary caramel and burnt orange and fades in flavor a tad; finish is medium-length with decent fruit but a little shorter than the rest of the wine would suggest. This is a classic youthful Rieussec: rich, dense, but great balance of fruit and fresh acidity, starting to knit together and develop hints of secondary character but still youthful. This one outperforms for an "off" vintage, though it lacks the intensity on the nose and the length through the midpalate and finish of the best vintages. 92-93
8/1/15: This is a bit more integrated, a bit more caramelized than when first opened. Still excellent acidity and richness on the palate, which is better than the nose. Excellent. 91-92
8/31/15: Over a month from when it was first opened. Color is similar; nose is still overall subtle but similar to when first opened; palate is richer, a bit more honey and caramel than I remember from a month ago but still vibrant and fresh. A fantastic showing especially considering it has been open for over a month. 93
