Two friends sharing two bottles of wine

I met up with Greg O to drink a couple bottles of wine. Since we are in the similar stage of our lives, there are a lot of topics we can relate and sometime, just to vent. The food at Eddie V was very good. FYI, a lot of cougars and sweet daddies.

• 2009 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

  It clearly shows the ripe 09 fruit which was not the case with the last bottle. Medium expressive nose displaying dense yellow citrus fruits, also flowers, honey, mineral and saline. Excellent concentration, coiled and dense mineral driven palate, bright acidity and lovely long finish. Though ripe, the overall expression is very Dauvissat with coiled fruit, bright acidity and strong presence of mineral. Enjoyable already but can improve for ten more years losing a bit of fruit and gaining smokiness.

• 2012 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard 98 Points

  Pop and pour, my impression exactly mirrors Bob’s. Explosive cult cab nose displaying perfectly ripe blueberries, crème de cassis dominates, lead pencil, licorice, incense, very noticeable luxurious oak via vanilla, floral note that I get in young cab, chocolate covered cherry and earth. Incredible concentration, unctuous, silky and warm, opulent crème de cassis driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and tannin is not noticeable masked by incredibly sweet fruits. The finish is seamless and incredibly long.
  
  This is a very cultish expression of Cab fruit and very Schrader, ie ripe and intense but quite precise in cultish way with strong presence of luxurious oak. What I love about Schrader is the fruit expression is blue vs red, e.g. Hundred Acre and other really ripe cult cabs. If you are a fan of old school Napa cab with slightly less ripeness and concentration, ie green pepper and no incense and luxurious oak via vanilla, this certainly is not the wine for you. The fact that two of us shared a bottle helps as in a big tasting setting, my impression could have easily been “too much”. Though first sip shows strong presence of oak, it settles nicely or I get used to oak and it becomes less noticeable. I prefer to pop and pour young cult cabs. If you wish for less oak and cooler/calmer overall expression, you can certainly decant for a few hours or more. This strangely brings back the memories of the wonderful hedonistic experiences of the 94 Harlan upon release. Schrader wines were hot a couple years ago but the prices have come down a bit. For my palate, Schraders represent very good value compare to other cult cabs.
