Introduction

Austrian Riesling has the capacity to bruise the uninitiated or nonspitting. It hides its alcohol and phenol well. Keep that spit bucket handy if you're trying this at home!

Flight 1 - Nigl Privat Flight (3 Notes)

Li'l mini of Martin's pride and joy. Woe to us: the 2001 was quite damaged, offering as full maderization as I've ever seen on an Austrian white wine.

  • 2004 Nigl Riesling Privat

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's house:
Fresh, minerally seashell aromas. Tightly compact on the palate. Almost Chablis-like mouthfeel with a pithy white grapefruit flavor. Fruit is young and primary but delicious.

  • 2002 Nigl Riesling Privat

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's house:
Big, ripe nose just begining to show burnt sugar-like secondary aromas. A big wine with a fair amount of glycerin and alcohol. Has a lot of mouth-feel, but seems a bit monolithic to this taster.

  • 2003 Nigl Riesling Privat

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's house:
Big, open, floral nose showing a touch of sour-patch kid and powdered sugar-y botrytis. A little residual sugar gives this massive, ripe wine excellent balance.

Flight 2 - Find the current Nigl Privat model (4 Notes)

The Hochacher was bizarrely effusive. Can't think that it was "off" in any way, it just was way too much, in the waxy semillon vein. I don't believe anyone picked out correctly the 2005 Privat after having just tried the preceding four vintages, but I could be wrong.

  • 2005 Nigl Riesling Privat

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's house:
Mosel-like aromas of fresh peach and green apple. Bright and racy on palate. Tight and linear at first, but flavors begin to broaden as it opens up in glass. Should develop nicely.

  • 2005 Nigl Riesling Hochäcker

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

Exotic, complex and almost too pungent nose with gewurz-like soapiness and ripe passion-fruit aromas. Massive wine with a waxy texture that shows quite a bit of alcohol and finishes hot. A taxi dancer in this line up of neo-classical ballerinas.

  • 2005 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibner Steinertal

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's:
More perfumed than most of the field. Sweeter, rounder fruit, but still ending with tangy acidity. Group thought this wine evolved into an almost Traminer-like aromatic.

  • 2004 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

    Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's:
The one 2004 in the lineup, and it showed: this wine was petite, discreet, and charming in comparison. Classic minerally, earthy wet nose. Big weight and acidity. Has a linear Niglesque profile, if we were guessing. Pretty much the group's favorite.
