Aussie Shiraz

7 of us came to the Edina country club to drink Aussie shiraz.

• 2010 Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard 89 Points

  New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

  Consumed a glass over about 30 minutes. This had a lot more acid and minerality than I was expecting. It was also a bit thin.

• 2007 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 92 Points

  Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

  Drank a glass over about 30 minutes. This was actually better than my previous experiences with this vintage, but other vintages have been better. The flavor profile is consistent, big, lots of tropical fruits, a bit alcoholic.

• 1998 Burge Family Shiraz Reserve Draycott 90 Points

  Pop and pour, drank a glass over about an hour. The soul of this wine is dark. It is definitely Australian, but there is an old world streak through it. There is funk on the palate and nose that blew off after about 30 minutes. Unfortunately, at that point, the wine became rather simple.

The Grange was the WOTN, but not by a large margin. It was only slightly better than the other wines. I personally think the 2003 Rusden Shiraz Black Guts we had the day before would have smoked them all.
