Introduction

The theme was Pinot noir. At the start of the tasting we were told that in every flight there would be a French, a German and a New World wine. For the rest it was a fully blind tasting.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Weingut Zehnthof Theo Luckert Frühburgunder *** 83 Points

    Germany, Franken

The bouquet is a bit locked but shows some minerals and red berries. On the palate red fruits and candy-like flavors; cherry candy stick, some acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Clean wine, but quite basic.

  • 2010 Domaine David Clark Côte de Nuits Villages 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

In the bouquet red berries, some smoke and a touch of barnyard which blows off. On the palate red berries, cherries, minerals, ok acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Some acidity and bitterness in the finish. Pleasant and elegant wine, but no great complexity in this stage. Possibly with some more years of cellaring, but I am not sure. For now 87.

  • 2011 Bodega Norton Pinot Noir Colección Finca La Colonia 82 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

In the bouquet red forest fruits and cherries. On the palate juicy red fruits, some oak, firm acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Quite basic and compared to the other wines in the flight, this was the least interesting. In my previous note I was a bit too positive.

  • 2011 Nelles Spätburgunder 1479N B52

Concentrated bouquet with red fruits, some smoke and acetone. Same on the palate, a high concentration, dark forest fruits, smoke, salty licorice and a firm amount of sweetness. Don’t know what to think. No score.

  • 2012 Bernardus Winery Pinot Noir 86 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

In the bouquet red fruits and some mineral impressions. On the palate a lot of sweet and ripe red berry fruits, mild acidity and very round and easy going tannin. A bit too easy and boring, but overall an ok wine.

  • 1996 Domaine des Beaumont Charmes-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

In the bouquet tea, lovage and autumn impressions. On the palate chocolate, mocha, coffee; quite tertiary. Good and mild acidity and slightly drying tannin. Quite mature and on the palate much better than in the bouquet. Nevertheless a bit too old and, although still lovely drinking, on its way down. No score.
