Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Santenay 1er Cru Passetemps 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru

Clear medium ruby with appropriate bricking; aromatic with leafy mulch, complex, red cherry; palate is light bodied, has good density but also fresh acidity, red fruit; finish is medium length, mouthwatering. Excellent, ready to drink now, balanced, depth appropriate for its region and level. 90-91

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Coravin 11/26/15: Pale ruby, clear, no bricking; nose has fresh berries, tar, roses, light on the nose; palate is light-medium bodied, high tannin still needs a little time to integrate, but excellent concentration of red fruit, nice depth, complexity; medium finish. Classic nebbiolo, don't know if I could tell Barolo vs. Barbaresco but excellent quality and depth for the price, enjoyable now but could use decades. 89-90. I would definitely try more of the cru bottlings based on this.
12/4: a bit more aromatic this time around, double decanted 3 hours ago, floral, tar; palate is similar, maybe more red fruit. I think this needs age, but showing well now. 90-91

  • 1998 Fratelli Seghesio Barolo Vigneto la Villa 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Coravin 11/26/15: Clear pale ruby with moderate bricking appropriate for age; nose is aromatic, pure floral, roses, red leaf mulch; palate is medium bodied, well integrated but prominent tannins, high acidity, excellent fruit, good depth and excellent complexity; medium length. This is excellent, close to superb, much better than other notes imply. Yes, it could use the superb complexity of a >$400 barolo, but it is balanced, aromatic on the nose AND complex on the palate, balanced acidity and tannins, enjoyable now but has at least a decade or more of potential ahead of it. 93+
12/4: a ton of savory character, more than when first opened. Very nice, fades a tad on the midpalate, similar to last time overall. 93.

  • 2005 Château Coutet Barsac 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Light golden color; highly aromatic with tropical fruit, pineapple, apricot, botrytis spice; palate is medium bodied, rich but still elegant with lightness on the palate, fresh moderate acidity, fades just a tad through the midpalate, citrus, slight tartness; finish is medium length. Excellent balance, certain parts (aromatic nose, balance on the palate especially combination of richness and elegance) show the character of Coutet, but held back a bit by the lack of persistence through the midpalate and could use more complexity and density. Excellent, fabulous food wine as Coutet is, enjoyable now but many decades of improvement ahead, but I think in the end may fall a half-step short of the top 2005s like Rieussec. 3-5 years before my next bottle. 90-91++
5 hours decanting: midpalate is fleshed out, nose a little less intense. I think this will improve for years.
Day 3: Aroma is slightly more moderated than when first opened (it is also a bit more chilled now); palate is very similar to before with good balance, good initial flavor, slight midpalate dropout, decent medium finish. Enjoyable, good value. 90
