Introduction

2 Chards + 2 Syrahs and a very good Mencia into the mix.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard 93 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

Screw-cap. Tasted blind. Pop and pour and drank over 2.5+ hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of salty and stony minerality, citrus lemon, green apple, and some slight metallic thing. After 2 hours of air, more buttery oak and ripe stone fruits. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lime, lemon, limestone minerality, salt, some slight bitterness. Over the night, this evolved with the bitterness fading and the wine taking on more sweet fruit. Also became more savoury on the palate and more prominent buttery oak with some nuttiness. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. I preferred this more in the beginning when it was rather Burgandian. Complex evolution with air time. Enjoy over the next 3+ years.

  • 2011 Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Villa de Corullon 93 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

Tasted blind. Pop and pour. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral violets, sweet spices, dark red cherries, chalky earth, and a slight medicinal thing going on. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (15%), very fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of concentrated dark red cherries, raspberry jam, blueberry, sweet spices, licorice, slight chalky earth, and medicinal herb towards the finish. Long finish.
Very good quality. This is rather New World in its forthright style. Flaunting everything its got. Much more depth than the Pétalos I tried before. Could develop well as it tones down a notch over the next 4+ years.
Fermented in small open wooden vats and aged for over a year in 80% new French oak.

  • 2011 Domaine des Ouleb Thaleb Syrah Syrocco 91 Points

    Morocco, Rabat/Casablanca, Zenata

Cork-closure. Pop and pour. Drank over 2.5+ hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of ripe red fruits, sweet red cherries, dried cranberry. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe red cherries, raspberries, dried cranberries, menthol, and peppermint. Medium+ finish.
Good quality. Performed above my expectations. Very approachable and drinkable now. No doubt the ripeness is reflective of the Moroccan climate, but I wonder if the alcohol level has been manipulated down. Either that, or the cooling effect of the Atlantic Oceanic influence in the Rabat/Casablanca region.
+1 point for balance and sheer drinkability.

  • 2002 Hyde De Villaine Syrah Hyde Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of black pepper spice, dark red cherries, leather, chalky earth. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.9%), puckery high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe red cherries, black cherry, black pepper spice, leather, coffee. Medium+ finish.
Good quality. Not very exciting other than the prominent classic Syrah black pepperiness. Unlikely to evolve any more with further age. Drink up.
A venture between the Hyde Family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine Family of Burgundy.
