Introduction

Our group held the first wine dinner of the year. The theme was Barolo and Burgundy. Eight of us got together and Chef Ruta prepared a ten course meal that was unbelievably good. The service was perfect as usual.

Flight 1 - Champagne (3 Notes)

The Cristal was perfect, the Dom was delicious and the Exquise was interesting.

  • 1979 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 99 Points

    France, Champagne

Absolutely captivating nose displaying fully mature complex grand cru white Burgundy nose, rich yellow fruits, tarte tatin, smoke, almond paste, honey and mineral. Incredible concentration, beautifully layered sweet fruits, fine mousse, strong presence of mineral, bright acidity and lovely long seamless finish. One of the top five Champagnes of my life, combining power, energy, grace, balance and precision. Incredible experience.

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Pure decadence, sweet red fruits, candied strawberry and raspberry, pinot rose, more pronounced smoke salmon than the last bottle, brioche and mineral. Incredibly fine mousse, airy, candied red fruits, limestone, bright acidity and seamless long finish. Absolutely delicious.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Exquise Sec 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Some resemblance to Initial but noticeable sweetness. Oxidized apple peel, golden delicious, honey mead wine and dry orange peel. Medium concentration, bright acidity and the finish that resembles sour beer. Very unique champagne.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (3 Notes)

The Dauvissat was a bit dumb, the Roulot Charmes reminded me the Lafon version and the Roulot Perrieres was a bit like the Coche version.

  • 2008 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Incredibly dense nose displaying lemon oil, lemon curd, honey and wet stone. Excellent concentration, dense and oily palate, bright acidity and strong presence of mineral and lovely long finish. This particular bottle seemed to be in a slightly awkward stage. It will need another ten years of cellaring to reach the peak. Nevertheless quite enjoyable.

  • 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Soft sweet yellow fruit driven nose, lemon, white peach, smoke and mineral. Excellent concentration, despite being fat and round, bright acidity and strong mineral presence provided the nice precision and balance. Interestingly, some resemblance to the Lafon version where the Perrieres was closer to the Coche version with a strong matchstick/gun flint note. It is drinking nicely in very youthful way.

  • 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Strong Coche matchstick/flint, cool white fruits, saline and limestone. Exceptional purity, precision and balance. Great intensity but very fresh. It reminded me the Coche version but more linear as the fruit is cooler and not as opulent. I can drink this all night!

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy (4 Notes)

The 10 Rousseau CdB flirted with perfection, the RSV didn't want to play but the Echezeauxs were ready and willing.

  • 1989 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Surprisingly big scale for a DRC Echezeaux. Slightly stewed intense red fruits, tomato, cherry, strawberry rhubarb pie, a hint of Asian spice, sautéed mushroom and earth. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered fruits, dense sweet and sour stewed red fruit driven palate impression, strong earthy impression, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long finish. Really interesting to compare with the 93 as this was the bigger wine with more concentrated and layered fruits where the 93 displayed the intoxicating pure 93 nose that we all love. Both were really enjoyable but I preferred the 93 slightly for the nose.

  • 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Exotic and intoxicating nose displaying perfectly mature Burgundy nose, sous bois, Vosne spice, caramel, a hint of stem still that gave additional complexity and freshness and earth. Very precise and lean palate, medium acidity, still noticeable tannins that are not bothersome and seamless long finish that ended with Vosne spice. A great example of perfectly mature Burgundy.

  • 2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Shy nose displaying mostly black fruits, blackberry, blackberry jelly, licorice, tree bark and mineral. Incredibly polished palate, airy yet beautifully layered fruits, exceptional purity and precision, perfect harmony and seamless finish. The palate reminded a great pomerol, very polished and silky, layered beautifully and airy. Exceptional palate showing a glimpse of the greatness.

  • 2010 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Just like the last bottle, intense nose displaying primary black fruits, incense, exotic spices, pepper, wild flowers and mineral. Sort of atypical Rousseau, so big. Beautifully layered, polished and silky, exceptional balance and purity and long finish. So intense yet so sensual. Profound.

Flight 4 - Barolo (5 Notes)

Not a good night for Barolo, corked and incorrect mostly.

Flight 5 - Sauternes (2 Notes)

Best Sauternes vs best Barsac. Preferred the Sauternes. The 88 D'Yquem was singing.

  • 1986 Château Climens 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Consistent with the last bottle, linear and cool. Peach water, ginger, cooper and allspice. Very precise and polished. It had neither the texture nor intensity of the 88 D’Yquem but perfectly enjoyable in very Climen/Barsac way.

  • 1988 Château d'Yquem 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Another incredible showing. Great intensity yet weightless. Expressive nose displaying mango, papaya, yellow peach, crème brulee and tea. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered fruits, weightless, bright acidity and love long finish. Great D’Yquem that is drinking incredibly well.
