Introduction

There is much debate about which wine varietal should be paired with Thai and Southeast Asian cuisine. Some recommend a lighter, fruiter Riesling to compliment the sweeter and sour flavors of the cuisine, others prefer a robust Syrah or peppery Zinfandel to hold up against the rich Asian spices and pork centered dishes. Well tonight we will have something for everyone, our eclectic selection of wines from various regions, varietals and vintages will allow for some very interesting pairings with the menu of Kuma Inn, a tapas style Thai-Filipino eatery tucked away on the Lower East Side.

  • 2013 Dragonette Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara

The nose on this wine was pungent, hints of lemongrass, dirty socks and skunk spray. Not for the faint hearted. Some people were put off by the smell, but on the palette the wine was much more composed, a little towards the dry side but not tannic, balanced, light, some citrus. I don't think I would buy again.

  • 2014 Domaine des Cotes Blanches Sancerre Rosé 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Classic Sancerre nice tartness and freshness, glad I have another bottle as this will improve with a little more time (6-12mos). Very enjoyable now, but it still has some hard edges on the finish that can smooth out with a little more time. Solid QPR.

  • 2006 I Giusti & Zanza Dulcamara Toscana IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Lives up to its Bourdeaux like blend. A big solid wine, more french than italian. With about 30 mins of air, this wine was very inviting. Certainly can benefit from more time in the cellar but this one is open for business. Close to a 90.5.

  • 2010 Amapola Creek Zinfandel Monte Rosso 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

The 6th bottle of a 7 bottle tasting. Smoother than last Amapola opened back in October, remains muscular, the spice is much more subdued. Presence of blackberry, the fruit had a hit of maturity, enough to make the wine more interesting. Ready to drink IMHO.
