Introduction
One of Linden Wilkie's Fine Wine Experience events, compered by Antony Hanson. This was my first experience of Raveneau and it all started well enough with a couple of very pure 2004s. But after these, all the wines showed a rotting dampness, which I've always assumed was unabsorbed sulphur, which made the wines, for me, undrinkable. But there were eighteen other people in the room who enjoyed them.

Pale, green gold, shy nose, hint of pear drops, very pure chardonnay fruit, rich, balanced

2004 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 91 Points

Pale, but an enticing nose, mouthwatering acidity, pungent and pepper, deeply mineral, dense, balanced, long. It got better and better as the evening went on.

Deeper green gold, a touch of tropical fruitiness, and a pleasant medicinal note, furniture polish, some sulphur. Very acidic. Painfully sharp.

A smoky burnt quality (took me back to dentist's drill in childhood) - tight chardonnay fruit. Quite interesting. (Anthony Hanson thought it "thrilling")

Yeasty nose. But again, marred by sulphury dampness. Underneath was a powerful poised wine, but still raw, even after sixteen years.
