Introduction

Another sensational dinner at goosefoot with an amazing winter menu from Chris, fantastic service as always from Nina and Chris, and a few amazing wines. Chestnut soup amazing and noteworthy as always.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2003 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Nicely floral start with super ripe apple throughout, with engaging citrus on finish. Just slightly lush, this has nice balance and very good textures. Very tasty right now.

  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Opened 30 minutes before serving, then mostly consumed a few hours later near the finish of the meal. Slightly more mature aromas than I'd expect for Montrachet at this age, but lots of spice and ripe orchard fruit. Palate was fresher and also very engaging, particularly after open several hours. Very good length and power.

  • 2004 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Opened and decanted 30 minutes before serving, then mostly consumed a couple of hours later near the end of the meal. Excellent floral start with some sweet spice notes. Plenty of ripe apple and peach throughout. Slightly compact finish for Montrachet from a great producer.

  • 2004 Domaine Lamy-Pillot Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Open 30 minutes before serving, then mostly consumed several hours later. Musty aromas to start with moderate fruit flavors and good textures. Mustiness dissipated with more air and while this bottle was never as powerful and concentrated as previous bottles drank in the past few years, it was very complete and harmonious.

  • 2002 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Opened and decanted one hour before serving, served single blind alongside the 2000. Both were incredibly similar with lots of ripe and fresh fruit with intense concentration, all alongside intense Asian five spice. This vintage was slightly more structured and had a slightly shorter finish, but was sensational. Bottle purchased at release.

  • 2000 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Tasted single blind alongside the 2002. Bottle open an hour before serving. Intense and ripe black cherry with some red fruit notes. Stunning Asian five spice throughout. Both vintages were incredible and incredibly similar, this was just slightly more harmonious and alluring.

  • 1997 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Tasted single blind vs the 1996, this was the winner but the other vintage was flawed. Excellent baking spice with ripe red and black cherry, along with moderate finesse and weight. While this bottle was not as great as another bottle I opened one year ago, this showed the same baking spice and bright fruit of the prior flight of 2000 and 2002 vintages.

  • 1996 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Tasted single blind vs the 1997, this came across as tired and most likely heat damaged.

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Villages

    Corked.
