Introduction

All wines were tasted not blind.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1963 Château Cantemerle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Tasted from magnum. The color was like that of a 20 years old (tawny) port wine. The bouquet was rusty, but not unpleasant and there were even some red fruits. On the palate there was a lot of acidity, but not really unpleasant. The wine was not very lively, but certainly not dead yet. The finish was very short. Within the hour all the pleasant parts disappeared and it was only thin acidity that was left. Nevertheless it was a memorable experience. Not one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, and of one of the worst vintages of the century, but at 50 years of age not completely dead yet. No score.

  • 1967 Château Cantemerle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Tasted from magnum. The color is impressively dark. The bouquet is very modest and it took a while before it showed something. But then there were tertiary tones, and even some black fruits. Same on the palate, so the wine was still in harmony. The tannin still had a bite, but it was a tough old age bite. Quite much bitterness in the finish, but not the ones that hold a promise. It helped to keep the wine alive. Compared to humans; a mid 80 year old, but in good (not superb) condition. No score.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Cantemerle 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

I did not remember my previous bottle, but this was in fact a very nice surprise. Not anything like the Gamay experience as mentioned in my previous note, but there was good coffee and some tobacco; both in a positive way. On the palate soft and ripe red fruits, but also dark and heavy aromas. Completely soft tannin and a silky medium long finish. If you have any bottles left, this is the time to drink the wine. It will not improve, but it will not be dead in 2 years either.

  • 2006 Château Cantemerle 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Very primary cherry bouquet with some smoky flavors. Ripe cherries on the palate. The wine is very open and accessible. Well dosed oak and pleasant round tannin. If you like your wines really young, this is the moment to start drinking this wine. Personally I would prefer to wait another 3 years.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Château Tour Marcillanet 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

The bouquet is still locked and not showing very much. On the palate there are ripe cherries and cassis. Firm acidity and bitterness. The tannin is a bit edgy and I would not expect that in a vintage like 2005. Anyway the wine is still too young and considering the edgy tannin I would wait at least another 3 years before opening the next bottle. 84 for now, maybe/hopefully it adds 1 or 2 points with ageing.

Mature bouquet. Also in the mouth completely mature. Good red fruits. Very harmonious. Soft tannin. Very pleasurable wine. Drink it this year.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

  • 2004 Château Beau Rivage 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

For a Bordeaux a surprising bouquet with some herbs, red fruits and smoky flavors. Also in the mouth surprisingly mature. Dark fairly ripe fruits. Good balance between acidity and bitterness. Firm and round tannin. In fact a really nice wine of Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc quality. And certainly a success for the vintage. Ready now and will keep this level for at least 2 years. 85+
