Introduction

Roberson wines organised an evening with Sashi and Jamie leading a tasting of their wines while in town for In Pursuit Of Balance London at London Cru which is always a great spot for a tasting.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2013 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Santa Barbara County

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Clean citrusy nose, light in the palate, more citrus, very light savoury toast, nice finish for the level

  • 2013 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Rita's Crown

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Richer nose than the Santa Barbara county Chardonnay, it has citrus again but not as well defined, it's rounder and simpler and not so savoury either but it's clean and well made

  • 2013 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Fresh lemons and a touch of gunflint on the nose. The palate has good weight, it's quite restrained but plenty of complexity of fruit flavour and there's a touch of mint to the long clean finish. I think this was quite tight and will need a little time to unravel

  • 2013 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Bentrock

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

This has a lovely nose to it like a minerally meursault, the palate is also minerally but relatively light with quite strong citrus acidity, this was very interesting and when the vines age (currently 6 years old) this vineyard could be special

  • 2014 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Bright and sweet fruited cherry nose. Very dry, maybe a touch of bitterness to it and drinking like a young Beaujolais in some ways, the finish is a little short

  • 2014 Kutch Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Apparently this was a very difficult fermentation and jamie had to warm up the barrels a couple of times to get the yeasts going, he didn't sound super happy with this wine. The nose was quite ripe and rich and the palate more depth than the Sonoma coast wine as you'd expect, it's good a little confected note to it and is a little high toned, there's a fair bit of interest to th wine and it's good a good finish

  • 2014 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

12.4% alcohol. 100% whole cluster. Deep berry fruit nose with some real complexity and Asian spices. It's deep in colour and very seductive. Only a few fine tannins here, it's full by Kutch standards which means it's medium body and elegant in style, where the Kutch restrained style works with ripe Sonoma Coast / Californian fruit and my favourite of the range

  • 2014 Kutch Pinot Noir Falstaff Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

This was a very different wine from hose that preceded it. Kutch take all the fruit from this vineyard. Jamie said that he thought that this was the better wine than the McDougall Ranch this year but on this showing it was hard to agree with that. The nose was full of dry spices and floral, it's really stemmy, not obviously ripe, it's very different but interesting. Very dry and good savoury finish
