Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1995 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Coravin 3/19/16: Deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; aromatic nose with blackberry, blackcurrant, slight tobacco, less green complexity than the 1997 but deeper black fruit and still has a bit of capsicum when tasted alone; palate is full bodied, rich black fruit, smooth integrated tannin, medium-plus acid, medium alcohol very well balanced; finish medium length. 93 Comparing the two: Both the '95 and '97 are similar in style, both fully mature and ready to drink, both representative of well balanced California cabernet. The '95 has a bit more density of fruit, a bit more depth of flavor on both the nose and the palate, and it doesn't dry out on the palate which the '97 does a bit. The '95 will probably live a bit longer than the '97, but both are ready to drink now and nice wines at ~$100.

  • 1997 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tried to use a Coravin but the needle pushed the cork in, so I double decanted. Deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; complex aromatic nose with black fruits, blackcurrant, but also complex hints of green, capsicum, slight basil; palate is full bodied, good concentration of black fruit but less ripe and robust than the '95, fades just a tad through the midpalate, and just slightly drying, medium acid, medium alcohol; medium length finish. 91-92 Comparing the two: Both the '95 and '97 are similar in style, both fully mature and ready to drink, both representative of well balanced California cabernet. The '95 has a bit more density of fruit, a bit more depth of flavor on both the nose and the palate, and it doesn't dry out on the palate which the '97 does a bit.
