Introduction

Eight members of erobertparker.com met at the 35TH Street Bistro in Fremont for lunch and Pinot. I thought about ordering one of their fish dishes but thought the Pinot might overpower it so I opted for the burger. Instead, the burger overpowered the Pinot. The burgers there are awesome. So the food pairing wasn't the best but the food was good and the wine was good so it was a very successful afternoon.

With the exception of the first flight, we tasted the following Pinot's blind:

Flight 1 - Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Medium yellow with a greenish tint. The nose has soft toasty oak, apple, butter scotch, and citrus. The palate has some mouth watering acidity. Full body heavy weight chardonnay. Long finish. Some alcohol showing towards the end.

  • 2004 Dehlinger Pinot Noir Estate 88 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Medium red in color. The nose is reticent but offers up some cherry. The palate has soft acidity and fine smooth tannins. Noticeable alcohol on the nose and finish.

  • 2004 J. Rochioli Pinot Noir East Block 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Deep red color. The nose is nice with vanilla, cherry, and plums. Also mushroom and leaves. Soft acidity, smooth (almost non-existet) tannin. When revisiting later, the tannin made an appearance and showed better structure. Nice finish but a little short.

Flight 3 - Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Reticent nose but shows a little creosote and oak. Big structure on the palate, a little chunky and chewy. Short finish. Lots of room for improvement with more bottle age.

  • 2004 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Sonatera Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Lovely nose. Shows some reduction that clears out with aeration. Cinnamon, cherry, damp earth, and leaves. Nice complexity. Well balanced on the palate and good structure. Pleasing finish.

  • 2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Dark color. The nose is cherry jolly rancher with a little vanilla. Hghi alcohol and it shows on the nose and palate. Good acidity and tannin levels. Persistent finish with some strawberry and alcohol. This would be very nice if it weren't for the intrusive alcohol.

  • 2005 Kutch Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

I had tasted this about six weeks ago shortly after receiving it. Today, it showed much better. Maybe I should stop waiting by the door with a cork screw for the delivery man. A lovely bottle of pinot with a nice smooth, full mouth feel. Velvety with a touch of sugar. Moderate acidity with some smooth tannins. Nice nose with ripe cherry, strawberry and cinnamon. Subtle oak. Smooth, seamless finish.
