Introduction

CDPs with 1 Rioja as ringer

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2006 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of stewed red fruit - red plums, super-ripe strawberry, licorice, spice, slight earth. Some weird papaya aromas with more air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet stewed red plums, bright red cherries, super-ripe strawberries, spice, licorice, hints of earth. Long finish.
Very good quality. Well-made. Good acidity, structure, and substance. But a little simple at the moment. Hopefully will develop more complexity with more ageing. Maybe give this another 3-4 years.
Blend of 90% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, as well as small portions of Syrah, Counoise, Vaccarese. 2006 was considered a good vintage, and grapes were not destemmed. Vinification in traditional, concrete tanks. Aged in a combination of old foudres and old as well as older French oak barrels.

  • 2000 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Noise medium+ intensity, with aromas of smelly pungent earth, sweet tea leaves, dried red cherries. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), resolved melting medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet dark red cherries, sweet tea leaves, licorice, earth. Long finish.
Very good quality. Fruit seems to be on the drying out side now already. Earthy barnyard aromas became stronger and stronger with more air.
Drink up over next 1-2 years. Not for further ageing.
Most of the fruit comes from old vine, low yielding, Grenache that was planted in 1926. For the 2000 vintage, 85% Grenache, 15% Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvedre. Blend of Guigasse, Les Serres and La Crau + Pignan terroirs. The fruit is 100% destemmed. The wine is aged for 14-16 months in concrete tanks before bottling.

  • 1998 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Gran Reserva 91 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla oak, milk chocolate, earth, leather, red plums. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla, milk chocolate, earth, leather, red plums. Medium finish.
Very good quality. Classic Rioja, and was easily picked out in the blind tasting amidst the CDPs. Drinking nicely now, and will continue to improve as the oak integrates even more over the next 3-4 years. Only gripe is that the finishing could be better.

  • 2005 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Croix de Bois 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.

On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (16%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red velvet fruit cake, confected dark red cherries, black cherries, licorice, smoke, meat, vanilla bean, bitter grilled herb. Long finish.
Outstanding quality. Highly complex CDP with very serious concentration.
100% Grenache. Vines between 60-80 years' old. Destemmed. Fermentation in closed concrete tanks. Matured in tanks for 14-16 months.
Very intriguing how the smokiness and apparent vanilla ?oak comes about if this was produced as it is.
Probably just entered into drinking window. Nice with a decant. Will continue to open up more over the next 5+ years.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, purplish-ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of smoky meat, bacon, savoury forest floor, earth, dark red cherries, black cherries, spice, hints of barnyard. Developing.

Outstanding quality. WOTN and guessed this was the Hommage.
Initially very tight from the bottle. Blossomed with air time in the decanter. This could go on to age and develop for another 10 years easily.
    60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, and 10% Syrah.

  • 2005 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.

On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (15.5%), firm high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, red plus, licorice, spice. Long finish. Initially just muscular and rather angular, but this rounded nicely on the palate with more air.
Very good quality. Good structure and concentration. Needs a while in the decanter to open up. A more muscular style rather than elegance here. Drink over the next 5 years.
From Montalivet, La Crau, and Palestor terroirs.
75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% other varietals. Mostly old vines more than 100 years old. Aged in vat and demi-muids for about 18 months.
