7th Anniversary dinner at Daniel

Tonight my wife and I, celebrating our 7th anniversary, enjoyed the fabulous cuisine of Daniel along with a couple of very nice wines from their list. Very nice!

• 1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 97 Points

  Ordered by the glass. Wow, I had this last month with Jason & Tracy, and at the time this was glorious. However, tonight this even at another level. The nose was remarkably expressive, bursting with citrus fruit, and toasty, faintly oaky notes. On the palate this is explosive, so vinous, broad and powerful, amazingly long with incredible minerality. An absolute revelation with smoked lobster.

• 1983 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Ordered from the wine list. This started out VERY smoky with peat moss, tobacco and leather, but with time the nose became sweeter and sweeter with cedar, cigar box and a hint of lead pencil, quite textbook Pauillac. The palate was initially quite austere showing mostly graphite and minerals, yet with time some bottle sweetness came to the front and the wine gained the texture of pure, hand woven silk, classic Pichon Comtesse. Throughout it was still dripping with minerals. The finish was medium in length, never terribly powerful and concentrated yet always in balance. All in all, this was a lovely, relatively mature claret, not explosive, yet very classic and highly enjoyable. With veal tenderloin, sweetbreads and root vegetables, this was a gorgeous and agreeable bottle.
