Introduction

Last night 9 fellow board members got together to drink some great Pinot from Oregon and California. Timothy Lesko who is the assistant wine maker at Siduri brought several goodies for us to taste and enjoy. It was great seeing several friends and Tim was Super in sharing his wealth of knowledge with our group of 9 people. We ate at Triomphe in their back private room and everything was great.

Flight 1 - Flight #1 (3 Notes)

2002 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir - This was a great flight. I personally love offlines that have structure and this first flight was just that. We tasted 3 different producers that make 3 different styles of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

  • 2002 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Ruby red in color. The nose has a beautiful fragrant nose of ripe cherries and figs, like a ladies perfume it danced from the glass. The palate is focused and silky clean with a medium body. All the pieces are in harmony, complimenting one another. The finish took you in and let you out in one clean 20 second sweep. A classic Russian River Valley wine we all agreed on and the prettiest of the trio. I am glad I brought it along. ;)

  • 2002 Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 89 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Ruby red in color. This wine was fruitier on the palate then its siblings and had a soft mouth feel. The alcohol stuck a wee bit on the tail end as the wine was consumed and had a slightly jagged edge. Might need a touch more time in the bottle to pull everything together. Cola nuances were apparent which we all talked about and discussed how some liked that cola flavor and others didn't. Not a bad effort, but less representative of the Russian River Valley.

  • 2002 DuMOL Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Slightly darker ruby red in color. This one was on the bigger side and was crammed with the most ripe red fruit of this flight. Very sweet and in need of food, it had a medium body and a quick finish. This Pinot is in the style that Parker would enjoy.

The flight above and flight below had that red fruit and binge cherry style that I love so much in Pinot Noir.

  • 2003 Siduri Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    This was certainly a young pup of a wine. It danced like a feather in lightness and was pretty with nice quality fruit. The finish was abbreviated. The wine need's some time to come together a touch more in the bottle and had a light spritz. It reminded me of a women in a sun dress on a warm summer day.

  • 2003 Siduri Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    A winner - the fruit is delicious. Ripe and tender the nose is filled with colors and flavors. The red fruit is happy to be in the glass - strawberry and cherry with a touch of vanilla. The weight is proportioned and the finish is great. This vineyard is a winner and one to keep an eye on.

  • 2001 W.H. Smith Pinot Noir Hellenthal Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Ruby red with a leather, saddle bag nose. The palate is packed with some spice and pepper and the fruit is between red and black.

Flight 3 - Flight #3 (3 Notes)

Pinots were coming from all directions at this point and I was trying to keep up between the 3 conversations, 3 wines, notes, and food.

  • 2002 Ojai Pinot Noir Melville Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    The darkest wine of the night. Looks like a California cabernet. Dark red. Everyone was nervous to take a sip of this wine as they thought there would be no turning back to the more delicate Pinots on the table. I took the plunge after smelling the very inviting nose of blackberry and dark black cherry flavors. The palate was surprisingly unlike what everyone expected. It was medium in body and very harmonious. The integration of dark fruit and silky tannins was delicious and the finish lasted for 20 seconds. If you like your Pinot on the darker side, you would really like this one.

  • 2003 Siduri Pinot Noir Arbre Vert Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Purple to ruby red, this wine had raspberry, cherry, and oak flavors on the nose. It's medium bodied with a nice lush mouth feel. The fruit is surprisingly ripe for Oregon and the tannins are there to hold it together for some time to come. The finish was brief.

  • 2002 Copain Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard 87 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

    Dark ruby red this one is very different than all its Pinots on the table tonight. With its darker fruit flavors it’s bigger in the mouth than the others. It coats my mouth and on the finish puckers my cheeks. VERY drying for a Pinot and not quiet what I am looking for.

Flight 4 - Flight #4 (3 Notes)

These were bigger wines in style and taste. For my palate, I prefer the softer, delicate, red fruit wines above.

  • 2003 Novy Family Wines Syrah Christensen Family Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Dark purple to red. Lots of clean dark fruit. Blueberry and blackberry. Nice integrated oak and good length. The mid-palate to finish is great. Nice wine.

  • 2003 Siduri Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

    Classic wine but I had some palate fatigue when it arrived. Ruby red, this has sweet delicious fruit flavors. Typical Gary's seductive in style, with sexy sweet fruit. Velvety texture and nice acidity. The finish is good. you can never have too much Gary's vineyard. Yumm

Flight 5 - Flight #5 (2 Notes)

California Pinots with some age.

  • 1998 Flowers Pinot Noir Camp Meeting Ridge 90 Points

    First I must state that I like my California Pinot young. I did enjoy tasting this none -the-less. It was light ruby red with cherry and was holding the test of time easily. Roser peddles and some underbrush as well. The palate was medium with currants and some spice.

    With 9 years of age this wine still showed its younger side. It was going strong last night and the fruit was thrilled to be out of the bottle. It sang from my glass with some cherry and tart flavors. At this point though my palate and body was shot..

Closing

A Huge thanks to Adam Lee of Siduri for sending both Tim Lesko and several of his wines. It was a great night and I was thrilled to be a part of it. Hope to see you all again soon. - Jamie kutch
