Introduction

A very interesting and inspired blind tasting; the wines were carefully selected by visiting sommelier Jan-Willem van der Hek (Netherlands sommelier of the year 2016 and Master Sommelier candidate) from the 500+ on offer by the glass at 67 Pall Mall.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2010 Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs 89 Points

    United Kingdom, England, Kent

Juicy, forward, soft but fresh, lovely complexing minerality, nice hint of toast, slightly high dosage does not get in the way, seamless and silky, ripe citrus fruit, friendly but still quite tight on the finish.

  • 2012 Y de Yquem 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Tasted blind. From magnum. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon; 10 months on the lees with bâtonnage (1/3 new oak); RS 6.2 g/l. Wonderfully floral and expressive, beautiful oak integration, complex notes of vanilla, vegetables and tropical fruit; the palate has broad shoulders but it is elegant too, lovely ripe fruit, perfectly seamless, very subtle phenolics; lovely resonance on the finish, very good length.

  • 1989 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu 92 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Tasted blind. Ripe fruit, lanolin and chamomile, retains its varietal typicity even after 27 years, smoky seal wax depth, hint of honey, so elegant and seamless, long and layered finish.

  • 2005 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bâtard-Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Absolutely stunning, incredibly youthful, steel and lemon cream, perfectly seamless, lots of low-toast oak (I first thought it was Coche), very intense yet incredibly elegant, power without weight - I would have sworn it was a Chevalier. Magnificent, seems frozen in time.

  • 2013 Domaine de la Côte Pinot Noir Bloom's Field 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Tasted blind. Very light and elegant, light and mineral, fragrant yet with good depth, violets, nice hint of cream, good length. Very stylish. It reminded me of Burgaud's Morgon.

  • 2005 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasted blind. An extremely elegant and refined wine, floral and fragrant, concentrated but delicate, refined and relaxed, totally at ease with itself, very sensitive tannic extraction, oak is barely visible, very long. Drinking beautifully, great future.

  • 1961 Château Rauzan-Gassies 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasted blind. Not completely bright, very mature appearance; smoky, quite tannic, still harmonious and together, retains an admirable freshness, a worthy survivor.

  • 1959 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux 1ère Trie Le Haut-Lieu 92 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Tasted blind. Honeyed, delicately sweet, hint of dried apple, lively and juicy, subtle bitters, hint of chamomile, long and pure. Incredibly youthful at 57 years of age!

Tasted blind. Very salty oak, long-aged, dry and Oloroso-like, ethereal Cognac notes, wonderful tangy acidity, seemingly endless. Great stuff.
