France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Heady floral notes, with orange and mandarin peel as well as lemon and toast. Very youthful and perfumed. Beautiful acidity, this has superb balance and composure. Great depth of fruit and the length is phenomenal. Seriously great and I'd say my second favourite bottle of Bonneau du Matray ever, only a little behind a magical 1986.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Slate and oak, lime, apricot and smoke. Powerful on the palate, with fruit that is youthful and some sizzling acidity. Has great detail even with the vibrancy of it all. Can see the family resemblance to the 1988 that it was next to. Very smart wine that should only get better when you hit a good bottle.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Rich nose of honey, magno, peach, papaya and lemon - has plenty of oak as well. Rich on the palate as well, with good texture and a cleansing wave of acidity is much appreciated. Has enough going on here that it has interest during its expressive youthful phase.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Herb, lemon, lime, spicy oak and pine needles. Quite a high level of acidity here that pierces through the slightly leaner fruit profile. Good length and carry. A little bit of time to settle down and this should be quite enjoyable.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Floral, cherry, graphite and smoke. The tannin structure here is still ultra serious, this is a wine that needs food. The fullness of the fruit does its best to keep up and while I think it brings good balance, there isn't a whole lot of complexity at this stage. Maybe a little more time will bring that to bear, but I wasn't feeling it tonight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Very brett driven nose and palate, there is some herb and black fruits, but there is also a metallic element that sticks out too much for my liking. The brett just overpowers the more delicate aspects of the fruit.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Bottle 348 of 1756. Bursts out of the glass with a powerful array of aromas - raspberry, roses, char, truffle and plenty of earthy notes as well as some herbs, spice and stalk. The palate is just as good as the nose, with a mix of great texture and depth and while the fruit is there, it is nicely restrained and layered rather than being a full on powerhouse. Excellent in all regards, this is a seriously impressive wine that was superb now and showed the structure that it will happily continue to develop if given further time.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Dark fruits, with blackcurrant and black cherries, earth and spice along with a slightly vegetal and stemmy lift to the nose. The tannins and structure here are pretty serious, giving this wine the potential for greater heights than it could hit tonight. Come back in 10+ years I would suggest.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and kirsch - definitely very pure and sweet fruited on the nose. The tannins on the palate do an admirable job of controlling and channeling the fruit into a fine framework. The fruit provides plenty of pleasure now, this doesn't really feel shutdown - I could happily drink quite a bit of this great wine, if there was any possibility of doing so.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Fairly savoury nose nose with cherry, graphite, ash and some meaty notes - continued to get better in the glass, showing more pure red fruits along with a smoky element. The palate is in a similar vein with that mix of savoury and sweet red fruits. Good length and balance, boding well for the future potential of this wine.
AP #21, 500ml. Melon, lemon, orange, white florals and peaches. Good flavour intensity on the palate, the spritzy acidity feels well balanced by the sweetness and fruit. Good length and texture, this is still developing and has plenty left to give.
AP #16. Sultana, lime, nutty and spicy with some toast and apricot. Steps up the sweetness over the Wittman Auslese, there is a burst of vibrant fruit and good acidity to counter. Fine and long, this wine rushes across the palate and shows some really pleasing traits. Great way to finish the night off.
