  • 2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut

    France, Champagne

It has a medium gold/yellow color to it. Nice aroma of apple and fresh bread. Very soft bubbles and a bit frothy. Attack was driven by yellow apple and lemon followed by a sweet honeycomb in the backend. It wasn't overtly sweet but noticeable. Very long finish, tangy acidity. Very good complexity. Easy to see why people like this champagne.

  • NV Didier-Ducos Fils Champagne Blanc Absolu

    France, Champagne

I've got "light" about 5 times in my notes on this wine. Light color, light nose, fine bubbles, light fruit, medium plus acid and red apple fruit.

    Sort of down the middle.

  • 2011 Copain Pinot Noir "En Bas" Kiser

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Dark garnet, as were all the 2011 in the lineup. What stood out immediately was the mineral note, it was along the lines of charcoal. Not a negative by any means. Bright red fruit with a nice acidic tanginess. The tannins were fine and the wine showed good structure. Me likely.

  • 2011 Copain Pinot Noir "En Haut" Kiser

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Not much coming off the glass here. Flavor is a typical strawberry that many vineyards showed in 2011 but unlike the En Bas which I preferred. Tannins are totally integrated and the mouthfeel is very soft and muddled. Drink up is my guess.

  • 2011 Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

This didn't show nearly was well has the Copains in the flight. Like the En Haut, the tannins were completely resolved. Nose of berries tasted like red berries and dark incense. Medium toasted oak and or stem. Just OK. I know Rhys has put a lot of work into this vineyard and the more recent vintages are far superior.

  • 2014 Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Mossy, herbs, and stem aromas. Tart raspberry and cherry and super fine tannins. Lightly astringent on the finish. A bit coiled. This is a baby, don't open yet.

  • 2014 Copain Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

This wine is on the riper side in the flight. Nose gives that away as there's a caramel and molasses. Good structure, little prickly tannins, ripe raspberry and apple flavor. Drinking surprisingly well at this point. Lot of people liked this one in the flight.

  • 2014 Copain Pinot Noir "En Haut" Kiser

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

This was my favorite of the En Haut but it's still way too young, as expected. It wasn't giving up much on the nose but the chalk and red fruit palate were very nice. Drying finishing. I enjoyed it for its potential when it blossoms in a few years.

  • 2014 Copain Pinot Noir "En Bas" Kiser

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

The En Bas again trumped the En Haut, I liked all the En Bas this evening. Likewise, a caramel note but dialed back. Fine angular tannins, red apple, bright raspberry, and cranberry. Underneath it all was a beautiful rocky component. Delicious.

  • 2012 Ladd Cellars Pinot Noir Nash Mill Anderson Valley

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Hum... I was expecting to see this in my cellar when I started to write this note as I have everything else of his. Bummer, I'm missing this one. This is a very good wine. Strawberry, raspberry, cherry, the acidity, round tannins. Excellent.

  • 2012 Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

The nose didn't explode out of the glass like the last time but still very pleasant sweet berry, almost a blueberry syrup aroma. Red fruit and the herbal thing are working well together. A tobacco leaf note on the finish. You want complexity in your Pinot then here you go. Good stuff.

  • 2012 Copain Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Getting towards the end of a huge lineup and the palate is dog tired. Probably more ADD than anything but I was able to scratch out that I liked the wine and it oak is showing through. Good balance and flavors. I noticed I mentioned that in a previous note too.

  • 2013 Rhys Pinot Noir Porcupine Hill

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Excellent. This stood out among the Anderson Valley lineup for its complexity and unique flavor profile where the red apple really showed well. The stem and oak are here as in many Rhys bottlings. High praise is justified.

  • 2007 Carlisle Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

PnP. I know but we're not afraid! Deep purple color, like you'd expect. Classic angular tannins, red, black, and blue fruit. Love the licorice or anise note at the end. This will last a million years in the cellar.
