Introduction

What an excellent foray into the great 2000 vintage at 16 years of age. This was my first experience with Yquem "Y", which served as a perfect kick start to the palate and also worked well as a cleanup wine upon finishing. Some youthful, some surprisingly open, some moderately disappointing, but overall the lineup was very good and was highlighted by the exceptional multi-wow VCC.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2014 Y de Yquem

    France, Bordeaux

Powerful flavors of quince, baked pear, orange, cut grass, and dry toast rest nervously on an oily and minerally underlayment and are propelled by excellent acidic thrust. Quite vibrant and alive, this has some youthful edges to round out but is commanding and outstanding.

  • 2000 Château La Gaffelière

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Quite ripe aromas of prunes, plums, and cherry liquor with some obvious dark wood toast and Bordeaux funk. Similar palate with truffles joining the fray. Detect some minor brett on both the nose and palate. A little clunky with the acid riding high across the palate and along the edges. Good, but easily replaced at 1/3 the price

  • 2000 Château Rauzan-Ségla

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Quite a powerful and focused cabernet nose here. Red fruited and perfumed with a perfectly measured funk component. Both power and elegance on display with clear focus. A little restrained on the midpalate but this is wonderfully tannic and long. A perfect accompaniment for a grilled strip steak. Really liked this one.

  • 2000 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Slightly sweeter black fruited nose here. Ripe black and blue fruits with accents of mint and smoke. Open knit with rich polished fruit and silky fine tannins. Certainly the most polished and supple of the samples today, a bit to its detriment. Finish is medium length and elegant. More grip and a touch of rusticity would surely help.

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark red and black fruits, red licorice, cinnamon, and graphite. A touch riper than expected, but certainly not in a bad way. Really expansive across the palate and loaded with grippy tannin. This, maybe above all others, needs some serious time.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Bold and brash on the nose. Black fruits, eucalyptus, black licorice. Offers a real sense of both power and elegance, where the fine silky texture plays a perfect feminine counterpart to its masculine stuffing. While relatively low in acidity, there is a welcome sense of freshness as well. This is fine enough to drink now but should age well for 2 decades or more. Not really my style but clearly a great wine!

  • 2000 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Crushed rock meets dark molten fruit. Gorgeous texture. Full and round in the mouth. Best acidity of the samples as well. Really a standout wine and one that balances classicism and modern styling quite well. Really liked this one.

  • 2000 Vieux Château Certan

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Hugely aromatic nose with seemingly endless depth and dimensions. I could smell this all day. Amazing! Not quite as developed on the palate, this is still rich and hedonistic with easy power and superb balance of textures and flavors. Angelic comes to mind and a wine that is clearly both emotionally and intellectually rewarding. I had little desire assessing individual components as the whole was so compelling and so much more than merely the sum of its parts. Easily mid to upper 90's.

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Focused and shows the power of Pauillac on the nose with dark fruits and graphite, with accents of mint, iron, and saddle leather. A little looser knit and undeveloped on the palate but this has a lovely plush texture, excellent power, and very good length. The tannins are fine and mostly unobtrusive but this is clearly young and in need of time to work itself out. That being said, I really liked this wine.

  • 2000 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very brash and forward. Packed with heavy black fruits with graphite and earthy accents. Teeters over the edge towards over-extraction. Undistinguished. A confusing wine, it displays some markers of maturity while also exhibiting youthful disarray. After the Gaffeliere my least favorite of the tasting and an abysmal value at $250.
