Introduction

Best bottle party (Red) without a theme. Fantastic different wine. Drank them completely blind for everyone. The

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

Vega Sicilia was the winner, La Chapelle not from a good bottle and Margaux past his peak

  • 1983 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

This was not the best bottle I had so far, in the beginning I thought Californian because of the mint and eucalyptus, but later it was more medical and iodine, no fruits left, too much aciidty, missing the fruit, 90-91, I would drink it now

  • 1962 Château Margaux 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

First impression was BX, for me over his peak, drinkable but missing a "fruity" middle palate, good acidtity giving the wine his backbone, some lovage, middle finish, this bottle comes from a perfect case but anyway it was over his best life

  • 1981 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 94 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Drank 14 reds double blindly. No hint just a BB
First thought was Bordeaux, very balanced, guessed younger, more tertiary aromas as leather, truffel and some graphite, in the long finish some cassis and cherries, the winner of the flight, 93-94, at his peak, maybe just over the peak

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

GL was singing, Mouton not from a good bottle

  • 1986 Château Gruaud Larose 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Typical left bank Bx in the nose, for me the 3rd best wine of the evening, very elegant but with masculin ripe tannin structure, cassis, cedar, leather some truffles but very lively, no hurry to drink but in this condition reaching his peak, started 95-96 and ending 97 two hours later

  • 1986 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

In the beginning I thought about cork but after half hour getting better typical BX with a good acidity structure, pencil, leather, missing some deepness and legth

  • 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Typical Bx but with some brett, good acidity, soft and ripe tannins, cassis in nose and palate, maybe not the best bottle but developing very nice over the time, 92-93

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

Da Capo is something really special, Cos from Magnum a beauty

  • 1995 Château Cos d'Estournel 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    From Magnum
Still Cassis notes in nose and palate with a refreshing acidity, good ripe tannin structure, in the beginning a bit reluctant but after a few hours showing a nice elegance of tobacco leaves and cedarwood, no hurry to drink but in a really nice stage

  • 2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

I didn't recognize northern Rhone, I put it more to California, nice saltieness with some white pepper and spicieness, more reluctant and shy with fine grained tannins, needs time and air

  • 2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A crazy wine, the most spoken wine of the night, very concentrated and lush, full of black fruits, spicy, cinnamon, thyme, it is balanced but not really settled. This wine needs time, a nice extract sweetness finishing this mighty wine, alcohol well integrated, probably for the next 20 years, 96-98

Flight 4 (1 Note)

Second time an experience with Verite La Joie after 2007, this time much better balanced and not so overripe

  • 1999 Vérité La Joie 94 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

It is a mixture from Cal Cab and Bordeaux, ripe and fine tannins, still some dark berries, crispy acidity and well balanced, very good at the moment and least for 10 more years

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

Togni was WOTN for me, pure elegance with lushieness of California, LB 89 not sofresh as tasted a few times before

  • 1992 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

For me at his peak, maybe a hint too sweet in the aftertaste, it feels a little bit broad in the palate but silky tannins and fine balance, 94-95

  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This time a little bit "disappointing", one of my favorite wines ever, this time not so young and fresh as I had it 3 times before. Still a phantastic left bank Bordeaux, drank it together with Togni 1994 and "lost", no hurry, drinkable over the next ten years at least

  • 1994 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 97 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

The wine of the night for me. This wine didn't reach his peak yet. Very Bordeaux style, some cassis, eucalyptus, violets and spicy, leather and a nice "sweet" finish, 97, Drinkable at least 8-10 years more

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 1989 Château Gazin Pomerol 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A friend of mine just said finally right bank, he was right more lushy than the most left bankers today, for me at his peak, ripe tannins with some dark fruits, maybe a touch too much concentrated and dense

Closing

For me the winner was Togni 1994, still a young wine, Pegau's Da Capo 2007 is a freaky giant, Gruard Larose 1986 the best classical Bordeaux at the night and LB 1989 first time not perfectly singing (96). A little bit disappointed from JL Chave 2001.
