Flight 1 (19 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

[Magnum] Beautiful bouquet of white flowers, lavender, mint, and reduced Chardonnay butter. Immediately you want to compare this to Coche Corton Charlemagne, but it is softer and more floral. On the palate this feels weightless but then sings with flavour for three minutes. Yellow apple, ago, and pineapple. First experience with a DRC Montrachet at this is really quite something. The richness is just amazing.

  • 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

A lot of echinacea on this nose with drying cranberry fruit and cool underbrush. Fairly quiet and a touch austere. Guessed RC as the '93 actual RC had more flesh and expression than this. On the palate this is a touch closed. A lot of tart cherry and cranberry here. Better after an hour or so. Palate isn't really ready to go yet. Austere.

  • 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Similar to the '93 La Tâche with that echinacea note up front but with a little more red cherry in addition to the cranberry and some cherry blossom too. A little more fleshy and showy so guessed La Tâche. Intriguing nose with a good degree of expression. Far superior palate with mature red and black cherry. Incredible balance and a long finish.

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Curious nose, endlessly intriguing and tough to get a clear read on. Austere with more secondary drying red berry skin. Herbal but highly expressive. On the palate this is amazing. The balance... is unreal. A fresher nose on the bottle of this enjoyed last month.

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Beautiful, elegant, highly expressive, and a bit showy all at the same time. Decidedly superior to the '93. Really pretty. Compared to the RC this is striking on the palate up first with more flavour but it is relatively fleeting through the finish. Still wonderful. Perhaps a better bottle last month.

  • 1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Beautiful bouquet, intriguing, complex, and a little unfamiliar. Not as expressive as the but equally as beautiful as the '90 La Tâche. Actually a better nose with more time. On the palate this is simply beautiful. The flavours don't strike the way those of the La Tâche do, but rather melt and coat the palate.

  • 1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Beautifully expressive bouquet, underbrush, sauvage, ripe red cherry, and stemmy florals. Wonderfully expressive. Immensely flavourful on the palate. Underripe black cherry and echinacea though the finish.

  • 1989 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

This is the youngest and most lively nose so far. Probably would have guessed La Tâche for the degree of expression and complexity of the bouquet. Full peacock on the nose with ripe red cherry, stemmy florals, sauvage underbrush, and a good dose of Vosne spice. Coffee notes, herbal, mushroom. Palate is energetic and lively with big mouthcoating flavours. Again, the balance is just unbelievable.

  • 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Highly expressive nose, sweetening red cherry fruit, sauvage and rustic underbrush, and a pronounced red meaty quality. Whole cluster seems very evident here. Some softer strawberry. Really beautiful.

  • 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

[Magnum] This is quite different from the '85 La Tâche as this has a more secondary underbrush and earth driven nose but then a very fresh and stemmy floral note comes through. Complex notes of coffee grinds and smoked seaweed. Whole cluster is evident in the stalky and rather green palate. Palate is simply incredible though. Rich and dense but a symphony of flavours overall. Perfectly constructed with massive flavours, hedonistic and spicy vosne juice, transcendent balance, and a soaring finish. Incredible.

  • 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

A touch herbaceous but comes alive with a good swirl. Expressive secondary red cherry with sauvage, underbrush, and Vosne spice. Textured and flavourful on the palate with relatively high acid and tannin. Came back after an hour+ and the tannins here were bigger than most everything else in this line up.

  • 1983 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Darker red and black cherry with notes of coffee and cola spice. Cola spice in a big way. Gorgeous palate as well. The balance and the finish on this is just unreal.

  • 1983 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Fresh, fleshy, highly expressive. Very pretty and showy. A touch of pine spice in here too. Exciting and lively on the palate with bright cherry and rhubarb. Different from the '83 RC.

  • 1969 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Cured jerky meats and balsa wood on the nose. Reading very thin. A little soapy with peculiar spices. On the palate however this is actually a lot better, tertiary Pinot fruit with cinnamon spices and nutmeg remaining. Some truffle as well. An odd duck.

  • 1937 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Maderized but still giving up a complex bouquet of spices and soily vegetables. Distinct asparagus.

  • 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Sensational bouquet with stemmy florals, red cherries, and layers of secondary and tertiary Vosne spice. On the palate this has aged beautifully and offers firmly secondary red berry fruit flavours with tertiary spices. Second to last wine of the flight so notes are getting shorter, but this was spectacular.

  • 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Comparable nose to that on the La Tâche but with an added layer of secondary complexity including tobacco leaf. Stemmy florals, red cherries, and layers of secondary and tertiary Vosne spice. On the palate this has aged beautifully and offers firmly secondary red berry fruit flavours with tertiary spices. This was the closing wine of the evening and note writing has slowed down, but this was truly special.
