  • NV Diebolt-Vallois Champagne Cuvée Prestige Blanc de Blancs 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Pop and poured. Drank over 2.5 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs. Persistent beady bubbles.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of bread, brioche, cream, perfumy yellow flowers, rich citrus lemon fruit, chalky limestone minerality. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (12.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of rich citrus lemon, brioche, cream, limestone minerality. Texture and mousse a little on the rougher side. Long finish.
Very good quality. Outperforms at its price point.

  • 1995 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Year after year of this same bottle. Another solid showing.
Poured into decanter and drank over 2.5 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose pronounced intensity, with aromas of funky earth, leather, meat, red cherries, some sweet tea leaves. Developed. With more air, the nose became somewhat explosively barnyardy with dirty horse stable - in a good way - enjoyable to me.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, firm medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury earth, meat, leather, sweet red cherries, red plums. Long finish.
    Very good quality.

  • 1999 Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Pop and poured. Drank from bottle over 2.5 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty oak, dark woody earth, licorice, dark red cherries. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), firm medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark earth, smoke, black tea leaves, licorice, dark red cherries, dark red plums. Long finish.
Very good quality. Clearly a modern style Brunello here. Dark and brooding. Oak evident even at 17 years of age! A nice drink nonetheless. Drink up, unlikely to improve any more.

Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sweet ripe red cherries, licorice, sweet spices. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), smooth medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of classic sour red cherries, candied raspberries, concentrated ripe strawberries, sweet spices, slight licorice. Long finish.
Very good quality. Nice drinking, albeit in a primary way. Probably needs at least another 4-5 years more for some tertiary development.

  • 2007 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 2.5 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries, orange peel, slight smoke, bits of earth. Developing.
on the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium tannins, full body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, red plums, bits of leather and earth emerging. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Elegant traditional Brunello. This bottle was much tighter than the other bottle I had earlier in the year. Will be interesting to try this again with another 2+ years of age.

  • 2001 Chateau Musar 92 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Pop and poured. Drank over 45 minutes.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is not clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of VA, bretty earth, sweet red fruits, redcurrants. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of intensely sweet red cherries, redcurrant, synthetic strawberries, sweet earth, licorice, sweet peppery spices. Medium+ finish.
Now this wine is sure to spark many a debate, and it has its haters and its fans. For me, I don't really like the VA on the nose, but the palate is good. This bottle feels like it's still going strong for the next 5 years at least.
