Dinner with family at Union

Introduction

Last night I made my second visit to Union, a still relatively new restaurant in Seattle. Also along were Suzi, her mom and Bob. As with our first visit, the food was spectacular. Lobster salad with avocado and cherry tomatoes. Seared squab breast and sauteed foie gras. Braised rabbit served atop a mound of whipped potatoes and mustard greens. Huckleberry tart with rosemary ice cream. Delicious! In the background was Tom Douglas (the owner of Etta's, Dahlia Lounge, and Palace Kitchen) also enjoying a meal.

The wines were equally compelling, as I raided my stash of 2001 Pride Reserves. No regrets at this infanticide!

  • 2002 Araujo Estate Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Lemongrass, ripe melon, and hint of ash on the nose. Huge, explosive palate, grassy and ripe with more melon. The acid is barely visible yet clearly present on this vibrant, lovely wine. With aeration this is getting more exotic and lavish, a lovely effort. My taste in Sauvignon Blanc runs more to the old world, but this is an alluring and outstanding expression of the wine.

  • 2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 98 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Decanted on arrival at 8:15pm, poured at 9:00pm, started consuming at 9:15pm and followed for an hour. Pitch black in the glass and decanter. This is surprisingly approachable. The brooding nose shows creosote, cassis, blackberry, licorice, and a faint hint of mint. On the palate this is stunningly layered and complex, powerful as expected, yet with depth, restraint and poise. There is remarkable structure and so much fruit to match. The finish lasts for more than a minute. Utterly, freaking insane juice, wow, this justs coats the palate with insanely extracted and pure fruit! OMFG, this just keeps getting bigger, sweeter, more complex.

Closing

I didn't write it at the time, but this dinner was partly to celebrate my last day at Microsoft. I spent the next 5 months on extended leave before finally departing at the beginning of February, 2005.
