  • 2010 Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Absolutely delicious. Rather riper than a classic Kabinett and still very primary, but this was very nice when paired with Lo Hei and a variety of other Cantonese dishes. On the nose, a little stream of petroleum drifted past ripe aromas of stone fruit, vanilla bean and flinty mineral. The palate was a lovely dance of bright, lemony acidity with pure stone fruit flavours, with white peach at the fore, and the a lovely floral lilt. It packed a real punch with a great seam of energy and easily Spatlese depth. Strong finish too, driven along with sweet lemons and a quiet mineral note. Not the most complex, but very yummy, and will improve.

  • 2015 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Like a baby compared to the rounder, readier 2010 F Weins Prum WS Kab, this was almost painfully young, but clearly very good. It had a drop dead gorgeous nose, with wonderfully perfumed wafts of white flowers and chamomile laced through sweet stone fruit aromas and a little line of mineral. The palate was very primary, with a rich, deep mouthful of peaches and ripe apples lined with soft, juicy lemon acidity. There was plenty of depth and intensity here, certainly more Spatlese than Kabinett like. Powerful, rich, but very nicely balanced, this will age wonderfully - it needs a good 8-10 years though. It was still a touch one-dimensional though, with simple grape sugars showing prominently at the finish.

  • 2002 Domaine Potinet-Ampeau Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Surprisingly good and quite ready to drink, this rounded up a trio of enjoyable wines on the night. This had a very nice nose, with savoury earth and granite scents underlying a core of dark fruited black cherry and plum aromas, all this sprinkled with a touched of powdered spices. A masculine bouquet, but also vey fragrant and attractive at the same time. The palate had that lovely clarity and integration that marks well-made 2002 Burgs, with soft dark fruit on the attack riding along an underbelly of firm tannins and superbly balanced acidity. The long finish was more savoury than sweet, with a lovely melange of meat, earth, and lots of spice filling the backpalate. Old school, but very well put together indeed. more savoury then sweet. Old school, very well put together indeed. I very much enjoyed this.
