Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang 94 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

First wine of the evening, this one brought by Ray and Shaun. I am a big fan of Dagueneau's wine, fun to try this vintage.

Medium/light gold color. Nose of orchard fruits, minerals. Palate showed citrus, baked green apples, quince, key lime, white flowers. Medium weight, layered finish. Really luxurious mouthfeel, nice secondary notes through the mid palate. Crisp and precise.

This is an 11 year old Pouilly Fume still drinking fresh and crisp. Very special wine...excellent

  • 2012 Pott Wine Viognier 20m3 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

One of my contributions to the evening. A nice add for an "ABC" theme Consistent with prior notes 1/22/2017.

Great wine showing well again tonight. Slight chill, PnP, drank over about 45 minutes. Does better as it gets a little air but still great right out of the bottle...I saved a splash and tried again later in the evening, perfume and secondary notes were a bit better...

Nice to share this with a group of sophisticated wine drinkers, big hit with this crew.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Viña Cobos Nico 93 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

First red of the evening, this one a contribution from Fabian. My first experience with this wine, 63 Cab/17 Malbec. Collaboration with Paul Hobbs in Argentina. Splash decanted, drank most over about 45 minutes.

Deep purple color. Nose showing dark fruits, cedar, earth. Palate of blueberry, bramble/blackberry, underbrush, vanilla, spices and some smoke/charcoal. Smooth palate throughout, soft and elegant perhaps owing to the Malbec content. Nice secondary notes through the mid palate. Tannins resolving but still present. Drinks younger than 11 years, would have guessed 5-7 yrs.

Really nice wine, great to try something so unique and well made (hard to find in the US). Drinking well now but should have another 5 years at this level...hard to know how this will evolve as I have no experience with this blend but seems like it has a good arc and further development ahead. Would be good to check in on it again in a couple years

  • 1993 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignon

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Generous contribution from Ray, my first experience with this vintage from Grace...I don't see much 93 around in general so limited experience with the vintage

Rich purple color, mild separation at the edges, core color still dark...Nose of black fruits and toasted oak. Palate was an earthy blackcurrant, dusted black cherry, brown spices, dark chocolate, cedar and oak. Rich through the mid palate, tannins softened. Medium finish, not as expressive as expected through the mid/back plate (perhaps the vintage). Nicely aged and well stored bottle.

  • 1997 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This one brought by Ray, splash decanted and drank through balance of the night.

Dark ruby color, some signs of separation, core color still youthful. Nose of black cherry, tobacco. Palate was showing dark fruits, blackcurrant, cedar, licorice and charcoal. Classic Eisele vineyard signature, some sweetness through the mid palate. Medium mouthfeel and long finish.

Nice balance of elegance and fruit, this is in a very good spot right now, fully mature, tannins resolved and drinking beautifully. Well stored bottles should have a good life ahead of them but I don;t think it improves much from here. Great stuff...

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse)

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This was a generous and thoughtful contribution from CVA. A wine Parker raved about in reviews (100 pts..), my first experience with the wine. Decanted for about 45 minutes, drank over an hour.

Medium ruby color, some signs of age. Nose showed dark fruits, pine and floral notes. Palate of light blueberry, dusted dark fruits, blackberry and tobacco. Medium weight and finish. Did not pick up substantial secondary notes with this bottle, but it may have just needed a longer decant or not been as good as prior tasters experience. CVA indicated his prior bottles were better than this one.

Hold off rating as I don't have a comparison for this wine. Very nice, seemed fully mature at this point. Drinking well....

  • 1990 Château L'Evangile 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This was one of my contributions for the evening. Bottle bought at auction several years ago. Decanted for about 45 minutes prior to drinking, consumed over 2 hours.

Deep ruby color, mild seperation. Nose of red fruits, truffle pencil/graphite, underbrush and violets. Palate showing dusted black fruits, plums, pomegranate, floral notes, and baking spice. Velvety texture, classic Right Bank wine. Medium weight, long finish that showed secondary notes of red fruits and spice.

This was an elegant, mature (IMO) Bdx that showed beautifully this night. Pomerol at its best...Tannins still present, suggesting a long arc ahead but drinking very well now. WOTN against some strong competition!
