The Links Club - New York NY

I thought I was having dinner with a few friends in NY, but there was another dinner with age of their other friends, and so this amazing dinner emerged out of seemingly nowhere.
1971 Reichsfreiherr von Ritter Zu Groenesteyn Riesling Spätlese 90 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Rich, nicely concentrated and unctuous with baked apple and marzipan. Faintly sweet fot Spatlese so wonderful with richer, savory food. Very good length.

1969 Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Auslese Cabinet 87 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Light color and seemingly fresh. But overall simpler than I expected/ hoped, with a somewhat clipped finish.

1996 Château Mouton Rothschild
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Started out backward, inaccessible and frankly unfriendly, even with dense and powerful black fruit. Good flavors emerged at the 90 minutes mark, and real enjoyment an hour later. Patience still required, but this will be worth the wait.

1982 Château Cos d'Estournel Flawed
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
A wine I've often liked, but tonight this was slightly musty and overall very simple. It never really got worse, but never improved either.

1990 Château Angélus 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Lots and lots of ripe black fruit with sweet spice and liqueur hints. Started out slightly one-dimensional, with the rich fruit dominating everything else, but more air brought forth more nuance and complexity. Upside from here.

1988 Château La Fleur-Pétrus 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
What a treat. Subtle black fruit with licorice and savory spice. Moderate weight and length, but great textures and nearly perfect harmony.

1953 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 95 Points
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
From 375 ml bottle in great condition. Fully mature black fruit with earth and tobacco. Great textures to start with crunchy, minerally character. This started fading slightly after 30 minutes in glass, with tannins also seeming a bit more pronounced.

2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
Glorious aromas of both sweet and savory spice with ripe red berry and cherry. Very similar flavors, perhaps with even more emphasis on the spice. Very good concentration. 3rd time in 10 weeks. A charmed life, indeed.

Baked apple aromas with some honeycomb. Same flavors with candied lemon, but more mature than I hoped. Moderate weight and length. I expected more.
