Clos Rougeard Vertical (2009-2011)

A big thanks to Mike Dombrow for arranging this tasting. This was a real treat to drink all these Clos Rougeard's. I'm not sure how many more I'll get to try in my lifetime.

• 2009 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny 92 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  Dill, barnyard on the nose. The palate is pepper, tannin, almost funk, good spice.

• 2010 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny 92 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  The nose is ash, green bell pepper and a little barnyard. There is coffee and chocolate. The palate is rich and ripe, quite complex. Blueberry and red fruit.

• 2011 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny 90 Points

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  The palate is lively with dill. There is a wet leaves aspect. The palate is bright red with lots of acid. This is even more vegetal than the others, and slightly thin.

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  The nose is a bit soapy. The palate is better integrated, with spice and fresh cinnamon.

• 2011 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 90 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  There is very little on the nose. This is the least exciting of the 7 wines. It did open up after some swirling, but still lesser. And still quite good.

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  The nose is quite soapy and floral. Pillowy fluffy red fruit. The palate has rich coffee and tea leaves. There is great complexity and acid on all these.

  These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
  The nose has a light gum smell. Tomato, tobacco, unripe strawberry. The palate is spicy and vegetal. This was quite enjoyable.
